Stay Summary:

Encantado, Santa Fe

Final comments:
If you are a traveler that spends most of your time off resort property, then the Encantado property should be considered as a great choice. If you are a traveler that expects this property to be in sync with the other Aubreige properties, RELAIS & CHÂTEAUX, Ritz Carlton’s, then I would check out the Inn of the Anasazi, in Santa Fe, or the and give Encantado a year to mature.

Grounds and layout:
3 Stars (Very odd resort layout. Many Roads and parking lots make the resort seem more like an apartment complex. Most people are walking in the roads down to the main house. Most rooms overlook either a road or a parking lot. Gives you a modern day motel feel. Nice view of the mountain range)

Encantado is an exquisite hotel for Santa Fe. It is north of the city and is part of the beautiful Tesuque/Pojoaque Valley. The concept of Encantado is very upscale for the Santa Fe area. It creates an ambience of the old with the new which is so lovely about the region. The staff is first class, always addressing the needs of the hotel clients. As a resident of New Mexico, I would recommend Encantado to all visitors who enjoy basking in luxury, attention, amenities and native charm. It is a must to experience. If travelers prefer cozy warm spaces to be together or uniqueness of regional decor, Encantado is the place to be.

We just came back from the Encantado Resort. It was our first time to New Mexico and we loved it. The Resort is truly beautiful, and the decor is amazing. The staff did everything to make our stay perfect. Especially Gloria, the Concierge, was so helpful and knowledgable. All in all, a really nice place.

It has one flaw, though, and i completely agree with the comment further down. All the rooms overlook the parkign lot. And to make matters worse, it is the staff parking lot as well. So you have a constant coming and going, and not very nice views. I simply don't understand why they couldnt have the parking space somewhere else, particulary for the employees. We had one of the more expensive room, but we could have gone for the basic as well, as the views would have been exactly the same.
That was my only disappointment.

The Encantado is a brand new luxury resort just minutes north of Santa Fe. Like the Auberge resort, the Inn at Palmetto Bluff in Bluffton , South Carolina, the Encantado does many things very well. It is in a gorgeous setting. On arrival, we were warmly greeted by several of the management staff, given a tour by one of the valet staff and escorted to our room. We were upgraded to a beautiful and spacious suite. The rooms are definitely first rate. There is a wood burning fireplace inside and one outside as well. The attention to detail is superb and all of the materials are of superior quality. The bathroom has radiant floor heating, a large closet and a deep soaking tub. Unfortunately, the shower head is cheap and there is inadequate hot water and pressure. The decor is a nice mix of rustic and modern with a heavy Southwest flair. The doors are incredible and the dark hardwood floor offsets the whitewashed wooded beams.

The central area of the resort is fantastic. It contains an upscale bar, and outside area with a huge circular sofa surrounding a large fireplace, the restaurant and a huge courtyard with a massive fireplace and pools of water. The pool is on a slope and instead of a dramatic infinity edge pool, the resort chose an unremarkable, small pool. There is a large seating area by the pool with another massive outdoor fireplace. The gym is a nice size with excellent equipment. The spa is very lovely and modern. The waiting area architecturally stunning as it is a circular room with high windows, comfortable chairs and snacks and beverages. My therapist was very nice and gave me a great massage.

The service is for the most part excellent. Every time we needed something, we called the front desk and they responded immediately. The staff is very polite and professional. They are a bit tentative at times, but that is to be expected since they are so new. The food at the restaurant was great. There is not a large menu selection, but the quality is excellent. As with all Auberge resorts, the mini bar is stocked every morning with your choice of drinks and they are complimentary. One of the nicest amenities is the complimentary shuttle service to Santa Fe. We arrived at the valet area and a staff member immediately waved a Mercedes SUV which promptly transported us to Santa Fe. There is a very nice lounge for resort guests where you can wait for the next ride back to the resort.

There is a serious issue with the resort. It is exceptionally small and leaves a tiny footprint. You can walk from one side to the other in five minutes. We are used to having the valet take our car on arrival and then being taken to the room in a cart. However, you drive right up to the room and park in front. You enter the suite from the rear. There is a large patio with chairs, a table and two nice lounge chairs and an outside fireplace. Unfortunately, the patio looks onto the parking lot! In the distance, there is a nice view of the mountains, but it is totally obscured by the cars pulling up and out of the parking area and golf carts whizzing by. The resort is built in a semi circle and most of the rooms all face in to the parking areas and other resort buildings. Ironically, the view from the rear entrance where there is no deck or patio is much better! Suites 63-65 are at the end of the resort and have the best view (but note that these are suites and not standard rooms). With all the cars in the parking area, one gets the feeling as if you are in a subdivision. You can mistake this resort for an upscale apartment complex. There is very little privacy as you sit on your patio. This awkward design and placement of the rooms and suites does not maximize what could be incredible vistas. Everything is tightly packed in and every room has a great view of the parking areas! If you like parking in front of your room as you can with most motels, you will love this place. Do not expect to have a room tucked away in private in the lovely high desert area surroundings.

Surprisingly, there are no hiking trails adjacent to the resort. Despite being surrounded by miles of gorgeous desert, you may feel a bit "trapped" at a very small resort. There is really no place to go for a brisk walk. And until the vegetation is fully grown, the resort will look rather barren and the rooms will not have a great deal of privacy.

For a superior desert resort experience, the Four Seasons Troon North in Scottsdale is a better choice. The Encantado has all of the essentials in place to be a GREAT resort. However, the design of the rooms, the compact size of the resort and the lack of privacy and great views are poor obvious flaws. It is indeed a quiet place, but it could have been so much more.
