“Great food, cozy atmosphere!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 14, 2013

My wife and our 3 boys are visiting friends who live on San Juan island. We bribed our friends to watch the boys at our campsite for a couple of hours so we could have a nice, quiet dinner together. Duck Soup was recommended to us by our friends and by Lakedale, which is where we stayed.

The Fried Brussels sprouts app was tasty. My wife ordered the Steak Diane, and I had a filet which I think was a special that evening. The dishes were both well thought out, cooked perfectly, and the flavors were great! The wine list was surprisingly good for what we expected from the rest of the island restaurants.

We enjoyed our food, but the atmosphere and service were what really did it for us here! The room is romantic, but not stuffy at all. We felt completely relaxed and at home, but special and well taken care of at the same time. It's not often that you find that nice mix, so it's even difficult to describe. The service was great, and attentive.

I wouldn't call it "pricey" because we've payed much more for much less at other restaurants, and unlike the other two restaurants we tried on the island, we felt like the price was justified by the overall experience. Next time we are on the island we'll return, and perhaps we'll bring the boys along as we did see a few children in the room while we were there. Thanks for the great experience!

“Romantic atmosphere - great food - interesting wine list”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 13, 2013

Before arriving you realize that this is no ordinary restaurant. Hidden in the middle of an island, that in itself is not so accessible, makes this quite a unique place. In a way it reminds me of some great restaurants that we have discovered hidden in the Tuscan country side, but of course the cuisine is not the same. As I only spent two nights on the island, I cant really compare it to other restaurants there, but in my books this place would rank up high on any list, on or off San Juan Island.

Upon entering we sensed a very welcoming and calm spirit. A comfortable little dining hall and an outdoor area. A Saturday night and the place almost full and we had to wait just a few minutes before being attended and after that the service was superb and very friendly.

I had seen the wine list online and had my eyes on a bottle of good Sonoma coast Pinot Noir, Kosta Brown 2009, that was priced with a reasonable margin on its release price, but quite below its current price level. This was one of many interesting options in a nicely presented wine list, that consisted of primarily west coast wines.

The wine turned out to be a stunner and really fitted the main dishes, a duck and pork chop on a bone, perfectly. The duck was excellent and cooked to perfection, tender and tasty, while the pork was a bit on the dryer side, something that was cured with an additional portion of a very tasty "jus" that came with it.

Some people have commented on this restaurant being expensive, but I can not agree as the entree came with an excellent soup and salad and the wine was very reasonably priced.

The whole evening flowed just perfectly and this was a very enjoyable restaurant experience.
This is fine dining, but with a relaxed touch when it comes to service and settings.

“Gracious hideaway”

The staff, food & atmosphere of this restaurant were all excellent. The menu offered options for all food & drink preferences. The location was a little remote, but we found it with no problems, and the site was beautiful.

“Even Brussels Sprouts are Delicious Here!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 30, 2013

I understand that Duck Soup Inn changed hands within the past year so we don't have a basis for comparison, but what we did encounter in June was fantastic. We split the Brussels sprouts for an appetizer and loved them - they were perfectly crispy. I had the gnocchi, which melted in my mouth beautifully. The desserts of blueberry/nectarine crisp and chocolate molten cake were a great way to end the meal. It had rained earlier that day so sadly we couldn't enjoy the outdoor lounge, but it was beautiful. The service was very attentive and appears to be a family affair, with a teen boy filling water glasses and bringing bread (but he was great too!). It is a few miles from Friday Harbor, so you need to drive or take a taxi (we had thought of biking but then decided on a taxi so we could enjoy some wine). My boyfriend indicated this is the best birthday dinner he's ever had!
