I have to say the previous review hit the target about this wonderful B&B. I found their website online and was not sure if I should stayed with them. But after reading their review, I quickly made my reservation.

Upon our arrival, we were greeted whole-heartedly by our wonderful host, Patty Rasmussen. After showing us our room, we were invited to sit out on the patio, while she served us lavender lemonade with butter cookies. What a lovely way to start our vacation.

Her extensive knowledge about the island helped us plan our days (we were there for 3 nights). We got great hiking tips, recommendation to restaurants and other highlights around the island. We had wonderful conversations about travel and shared out experience about different cultures.

Patty helped us make our reservations for our whale watching trip at Snug Harbor. The trip was about 2 1/2 hours long and well worth it. Unfortunately, we didn't get a chance to do any kayaking.

Unlike other B&B, we didn't have a set time for breakfast. We're late riser (8/8:30am)....so, Patty let us sleep in! We had breakfast by ourselves. Whereas the other set of couples, who stayed there had to get up earily for their ferry rides took breakfast at 7am. I don't know if she will continue to do this, but it worked out really well for us. Of course, if we stayed with other late riser, we would've love to share breakfast at the same time.

One note, this is their home, so they will be there :-)
They live upstairs, but it's so quiet here that I didn't hear them or guests in the next room. I'm just glad they are willing to share their home with us.

The Rasmussen likes to remember their guests, so you will find Jerry asking you to stand in front of their Native American craved door for a picture opt. Just a little remember for you and your vacation.

  • Liked — The excellent service & wonderful food
  • Disliked — nothing I can think of
  • Tips/Secrets — There's another seperate building on the property with a kitchen and its own patio.

My husband and I have lived in Seattle for a few years and have travelled quite a bit in the surrounding area. We do enjoy the outdoors, hiking, kayaking, and simply exploring. We also appreciate good service, hospitality, and attention to details.

On our recent trip to San Juan Island we had a most delightful experience staying at Longhouse B&B, nestled in a very quiet cove in Snug Harbor, a 10 minute drive to Friday Harbor & the ferry. There are kayak and whale-watching tours out of Snug harbor, departing a short walk from the house. Our hosts, Patti and Jerry Rasmussen are former Seattle-ites who now have lived on San Juan Island for 16 years. They are both very knowledgable about the islands sites, activities, and history and have extensive worldly travelling experience. Patti, previously a well-regarded restauranteur/ chef (Rovers, Cafe Juanita), was extremely helpful with tips about the area, places to visit, local hikes, and of course great suggestions for places to eat. She helped us make the most of our 3 1/2 days there.

I would describe the accomodations as comfortable, very clean, and quiet. The Longhouse B&B was previously the site of an actual native American Longhouse hundreds of years ago. Patti and Jerry have preserved much of the historical charm with great art pieces and antiques. The room where we stayed had a bathroom across the hall, which for us was not an inconvenience. We were provided fluffly bathrobes and slippers... a nice touch. The main room has a lovely water view. We saw deer and 1 very large funny looking slug on the outdoor property... very cute.

One of the best parts of the stay was the breakfast. A Patti Rasmussen breakfast is a special treat... your choice of espresso drink or of a huge variety of artisan teas, homemade scones, fluffy delicious Dutch Baby pancake with ripe peaches and creme freche or quiche, locally made chicken sausage, and beautifully served fresh cut strawberries and local organic kiwi garnished with edible flowers and herbs. Yummy!

Overall, I would highly recommend this B&B to anyone who is looking for a hidden gem, slightly off the beaten path, with a lot of personality and beauty that is a very good value. I did a lot of research prior to our visit and was very turned off by the unoriginal Inns that were charging $250 plus. We don't usually take time to write reviews after our travels but we hope that this will help other epople who are looking for a special place for their San Juan getaway.
