There are some nice hikes and some interesting history, but it's definitely not a must do while on the island.

“Beautiful views, good hiking”
Reviewed May 24, 2014

We really enjoyed the history of the site and the nice trails. This is a wonderful way to get out of the car, get some exercise and see the beauty of the islands.

“A bit of history, a bit of hiking”
Reviewed May 22, 2014

You can see why the Brits were a happier bunch than the Americans during the time San Juan Island was divided. English Camp is tucked away in a protected bay, while blustery American Camp is exposed to winds coming in from two bodies of water. English Camp is the smaller of the two military garrisons, easy to walk around and with enough explanatory plaques and archival photos to get some sense of what life might have been like for the soldiers (and, in some cases, families) posted so far from home. There is quite an extensive network of trails in and around the camp, and it’s just a short drive from English Camp to scenic Roche Harbor.

This is a great place to hike and see some history. We always see marine life here at the lighthouse!

“English had a better camp than the Americans”
Reviewed May 5, 2014

Easy walk down to the parade grounds and to view the barracks. Close to the sea and nice small garden. Great place for kids to roam and run around since large grassy areas.
