The website made this place look decent, but we should have walked away when there was only one other party in the restaurant at 7pm on a Saturday night. The food and service were just bad, bad, bad. It's not like the staff was rude or anything, they just had no clue (or didn't really care) about good service an weren't knowledgeable about the dishes that were offered. As for the food, it was completely amateur. It's like they tried really hard to do some inventive dishes, but just missed on execution. The asparagus bisque was flavorless and had a bunch of stringy bits in it, the spot prawns were slightly undercooked and paired with Harissa carrots that were a bit too spicy and overpowered the dish, the flank steak was ok, but the fried onions and green
chili pudding it was served with lacked flavor. This place is really bad for the price you pay. We
had a MUCH better meal at Coho the night before for the same price. Bottom line, the Bluff needs to quit pretending to be a gourmet restaurant and stick to basic dishes that they can properly execute and charge a fair price for.

Management response:Responded July 11, 2012

Dear Foodie123,
I am truly discouraged with the poor experience you had at our restaurant as the majority of people who come from all over the world say it’s some of the best food they have had, and often compare our style and execution to chef’s I would never dream of trading plates with. We have a very ingredient driven philosophy and let the product stand out with our preparations. Almost all of the ingredients you were served come from local sustainable farming on the islands, and the spot prawns come from one of the most reputable purveyors in the state that supply several of Seattle’s top restaurants. We do not use high fructose or sodium ingredients like some of the popular chain restaurants which could account for the lack of flavor-just natural flavors simply prepared. I would agree that the asparagus bisque should have been strained—and I wish we had heard your input prior to leaving the restaurant, as I’m sure we could have recovered. I will continue to work with our team on their product knowledge and I appreciate your input. If you are in Friday Harbor again I would encourage you to give us another try.

Kle Nicholson,
Chef/Inn Keeper

We stayed at Friday Harbor House and ate breakfast and dinner at The Bluffs.

We dined at the restaurant on our last night on the island and were impressed by the food and especially the service. Our waitress was amazingly friendly and helpful and full of wonderful tips on places to visit. We would definitely recommend to anyone visiting the islands, it was a lovely meal and a very enjoyable evening.

If you can't make it out to the much more highly recommended Duck Soup Inn (requires a car or taxi), the Bluff Restaurant may be your best choice for great food and service right in town. The menu is a bit sparse, but the food is very well prepared with fairly generous portions. The wine and beer list is also surprisingly abbreviated. The view from most tables is great, and even better if nice weather allows outdoor seating.
