The Lime Kiln Lighthouse and Interprative Center is a great place to see Orca Whales and learn about their plight. The views are fantastic and the marine biologists on hand will answer every question you might have about the Orcas.

We stopped in to get our parking pass and were pleasantly surprised by this little interpretive center. Not only was the staff extra-nice and welcoming, they have a short film you can sit through that runs on a continuous loop that tells a lot about the area. Then, it's a short walk to the lighthouse, which was really special. We didn't see any whales, but you won't be disappointed just taking in the scenery or grabbing a bite to eat at one of the beach side picnic tables..

On several trips we found Lime Kiln Point the most reliable way to see Orcas and in what felt like an almost personal way. They come to this area as a safe environment that offers them the comfort of a "belly scratching" zone. We watched and followed a pod travel back and forth- what a treat!

Unfortunately we visited on a day when the whales were not visible from the observation areas, but that was more than compensated for by a wonderful tour guide. She explained all about the whales (residents and visitors) as we walked along the shore hoping to spot one. The historic lighthouse was open and we had an opportunity to chat with the whale researchers there. She then took us to the furnace from which the park derives its name and explained all about its workings along with the lime industry and its dangers.

The concession stand offered wonderful coffee, tea and a variety of foods. The main building contains a small exhibit area that was very educational.

Picnic tables are scattered throughout the area. Restrooms were clean and appear to be well maintained. There are bike racks.

We pedaled there on ebikes that we rented from the Meat Machine Bicycle Shop in Friday Harbor. It was a delightful way to enjoy the countryside on our way to the park.

If you do the entire walk of the park, be sure you are able to traverse some steep unpaved walkways. Beautiful vistas!! The staff at the center offered much information but only one person can take you up in the lighthouse and that person was not available when we visited.
