If you are looking for an Amazing place to stay where the staff is attentive and accommodating, this is it!! The manager's name is Ken and he was a pleasant and full of information. It was our first trip to the island and he told us where the must see places were and informed us of the whales the morning we headed out to find adventure. We not only got to see the whales without getting on a boat but we were fortunate enough to view sea lions from five feet away. A-mazing!!! The cabin we stayed in was perfect!! The kitchen was fully stocked with dishes and cooking utensils, clean and ready to use. Right outside of our cabin window was the harbor and views of beautiful sailboats. To our left was the ocean and again, the view was breath taking. I suggest this resort to any other, as I researched many before leaving the mainland. The rates, the staff and the accommodations are well worth every cent I spent!!!

Room Tip: If you are looking for one to two people staying then pick one of the Panabode cabins. If you have m...

My wife and I (and dog!) had a wonderful stay here last weekend. We'd booked the waterfront cabin special, and were delighted to find that we were upgraded to 'The Treehouse' upon checking in. Beautiful view of the marina and bay. Very spacious room. Weather was a little cold to enjoy the deck, but it would be fantastic in nice weather.

We stayed here for a family getaway. We're a family of 4 plus our dog. The "Norwester" cabin was well equipped with a seperate loft for the kids and bedroom for the adults. The cabin was right on the water. Our family made use of the available barbeque as well as the firepit (wood is supplied) for some no-tv family time. Touring the island was very interesting and included some scenic hikes, including English Camp and American Camp, part of the San Juan Island National Historic Park. The Snug Harbor staff were very friendly and attentive.

My husband and I stayed here at Snug Harbor in the two-bedroom Panabode over Christmas. It was wonderful, much more than I expected. It's a great location, very quiet, right on the water. It's gorgeous. The cabin was amazing. It was completed earlier this year so you could still smell the new wood smell as soon as you walked in the door. We loved the view of Mitchell Bay while sitting in the cozy living room with the fireplace going. We would definitely come back here and we have recommended this place to our friends. Ken, the manager, was very accommodating during our stay. All of the staff were friendly.

Heather,

Thank you for your wonderful comments! They reflect exactly what our vision was for a winter visit while designing the cabins and their interiors. To be wowed when you entered, to relax in your surroundings and enjoy the amazing views while the fireplace kept you warm and cozy. We are so pleased to know our vision became reality for you and your husband. Thank you for sharing.

We took our family to stay in the new two bedroom cabin (#10) that has recently been built. The cabins are very clean and very comfortable with a nice small kitchen, kitchen table, couches, chairs and TVs. We have two small girls 3 and 5 years old so having a second bedroom with two twin beds was fantastic so we could get them to sleep and then watch a movie. WiFi was down while we were there as the wind had apparently blown their antenna but we didn't miss it. The cabins are heated by really nice gas furnaces.

The staff here is amazingly helpful and friendly. My wife had a minor medical issue while we were staying and the entire staff was super helpful at helping us deal with it.

The setting is beautiful, tranquil and quiet. Highly recommended. We'll stay again.

Room Tip: try the new cabins. we were in #10

There is something for everyone here, from comfortable, cozy cabins, a treehouse or VERY nice accomodations. Kenny and the rest of the staff are great and the view spectacular. There is a fire pit and abundant fire wood next to the water. The town was fun too. Nice ferry ride. Really good weekend -

Thanks

My wife and I stayed five nights in the Nor'wester cabin closest to the road (#9) in mid-October. The unit is "well worn", but very nice, quiet, and quite comfortable. We were saddened, yet excited, to hear that these units would soon be replaced by updated cabins early next year. The coffee shop they recently put in was a very nice addition along with their small shop. Having access to food and comforts is nice since it keeps you from having to go into town for everything.

Ken and his staff went beyond our expectations for our stay and treated us as friends. Ken is a great guy with a fantastic personality and is genuine toward everyone.

This location is probably the best on the island since you are far from the traffic near the town and port of Friday Harbor, yet within 15 minutes of most of the highlights of the island. During our stay we saw Bald Eagles, black tailed deer, and a Harbor Seal all from right in front of our room!

Tips for visiting:

If you want to visit the Lime Kiln Lighthouse (Whale Watch Park) you will need a Discover Pass (one day for $10 or yearly for $30). I bought the yearly, but we went three days during the week and we plan to come back before it expires. I bought it at the Ace Hardware store on Argyle (which is close to some eight hour parking spots on Web Street). To purchase the license at Ace you have to use cash, the department register does not accept credit cards. The Discover Pass is available at any location that sells fishing/hunting licenses including Walmart if you are off island.

The pass is worth it to visit the park. We did not see Orca whales during our visit (bad timing and weather), but we did see plenty of Harbor Seals resting on rocks (walk quietly and look to the rocks for them to be resting, we saw one every day at the north end of the park and even one at the Lime Kiln area resting on a small beach. Also look for purple starfish! The lighthouse area contains a lot of information on signs about the various wildlife you may see from that spot. I recommend binoculars, but if you are lucky the Orca will be within 50 feet of shore due to the deep water close to the lighthouse.

There is also a park just to the north called San Juan County Park (not even ten minutes from Snug Harbor), it is free to visit and park and they offer camping, boat launch, etc. If you enter from the south entrace you will see Smallpox Bay, which offers a narrow view, but driving up a short road north you will find a parking area with access to a picnic and scenic area. We saw a Bald Eagle sitting out on a sign on a small island out in front of this area. To the south of Lime Kiln Point State Park there are plenty of pull off areas that will offer great views of the water as well as the Olympic Mountains in the distance.

Another park that uses the Discover Pass is the Cattle Point Lighthouse area on the southeast tip of San Juan Island. From here you can walk north and see an Island (Goose Island) that typically is full of Steller Sea Lions (which are endangered).

If you plan to see the shops in town at Friday Harbor I recommend finding a parking map online that shows the timed parking areas. This may be harder to find good spots in the summer months, but everything good is within walking distance. Fan of the television show "Whale Wars"? Friday Harbor is the home of the offices for Sea Shepherd and is also home to a Gallery (located on the corner of Nicholas and A streets - it just moved and we were fortunate enough to be invited in and were the fist to sign the door!).

Want a great whale watching adventure? If you choose to stay at Snug Harbor then Maya's Westside Charters is a no brainer. The boat is right at Snug Harbor and the Captain is a GREAT guy. Our tour was cancelled due to bad weather, but he said we could jump in the boat to help him get his crab pots in Mitchell Bay. The ride was just five minutes, but we got to see crab up close and he taught us all about them (he's a former teacher). Then when we got back to the marina he showed us how to clean and cook them and offered us enough for a meal. It was a great experience to catch food, prepare, and eat it all within an hour and the crab taste much better fresh and better taste than what I've had in Maine and other spots (will never eat Red Lobster again). We did go the next day with eight other people (he usually only takes six, but he offered another couple who was leaving that day a chance and even asked those aboard if they had objections.

This is a small boat and is slighly more expensive than some of the larger boats, but it will offer you more of a private view and more up close (while still following the laws). He also brings along Jeanne Hyde who is a local naturalist. We saw dozens Dall's Porpoise (jokingly look like baby Orca) that swam back and forth in front of our boat and are extremely fast. We saw a Minke whale, a few Harbor Seals surfacing, and saw 30 plus Steller Sea Lions at Goose Island and were close enough to hear and smell them. This felt like a personal tour of the ocean life and ranks #1 in my whale/dolphin watch experiences from Maine to Florida.

My last piece of advice is to top off your car before nearing Anacortes as well as stopping at a grocery store to buy food as both are very expensive on the island (gas $4.66/gallon when we visited). I rented a car at SeaTac Airport, drove to the Ferry in Anacortes, drove around the island for five days, went to Pikes Place market in downtown Seattle, and still had gas in my tank when I dropped it off on the sixth day. Snug Harbor is on the opposite side of the island, but only nine miles away. We will be back next year for sure.

Room Tip: We wanted a water view and to be very close to the water. While boats are sometimes launched into th...
