Red Roof Inn San Antonio - Lackland
Ranked #260 of 358 Hotels in San Antonio
Reviewed April 19, 2012

I chose this hotel because it is close to Lackland AFB, but I found out it's about a 10 minute drive to the gate the Valley Hi Gate. The area surrounding the motel is pretty run down. The bed sheets had the strongest bleach scent ever, and the pillows were too firm. The TV kept turning off, same with one of the main lights, and the blow dryer. At one point the water was turned off for about 30 minutes (Right when I was about to hop in the shower too, ugh could you imagine having soap on your face and it turning off?) The coffee machine literally took 1 hour to fill 1 cup. (Good thing Denny's is next door, also if you bring your room key you get a 10% discount there.) Also, the mini fridge did not work. Basically, if you're looking for something cheap and not expecting much except a place to sleep then stay here, but lock your door lol.

Room Tip: I suggest finding a hotel more North in the Sea World area. It's a newer and nicer area.

We booked here due to the price and nearness to Lackland. We stayed 4 nights. The first 3 nights we were kept awake by a "long term customer" A group of construction workers that partied (drinking, yelling, laughing, and playing loud music) until 2am. We had to call the desk and ask them to tell them to be quiet. They even grilled out in the back of their work truck. Finally the manager moved them on the last night we were there. The mattreses are old and stained, there is very limited hot water. However the hotel staff was very friendly, and the restaurant next door "taco cabana" was excellent.

Room Tip: look for the work truck and dont stay near it

The rooms were clean and didn't smell. The beds were comfy of course it is a motel, so don't expect pillow tops. The continental breakfast was typical but had enough to get you going in the morning. If you are going on a trip but not planing to spend much time in your room, I highly recommend this hotel because of the price. It's close to both downtown and Sea World. Take your GPS though because the freeways can get a bit confusing. The staff was really helpful and friendly. There was plenty of hot water and the bathroom was clean. MY only complaint would be that they need to update their T.V.'s, and if the pool's heater was working we probably would have swam.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a T.V. that you can hook your game system up to if you bring the kids along.

We were there for 5 nights, went for my son's AF Graduation. Couldn't afford a lot but it was an important trip. The room was not extremely large but big enough for 2 beds, Dresser, mini fridge, and microwave. It was clean, showed a little wear but not in ways that were a big deal. The sheets were white, and smelled fresh. the shower was clean and free of mildew stains. The air conditioning worked really well too! We didn't eat the free breakfast (neither of us are breakfast people) so can't speak for that. They only real complaint was not very many channels to choose from.

My son and others in his class were told by someone on base to direct their family from this hotel because of the location. But it was just down the road from the Holiday Inn Express and other recommended hotels. The area around it was clean but there were some abandoned buildings with graffiti, but we didn't have a moment of unease or concern. We were in a back section behind the hotel, we didn't see anyone "hanging around" the area or anything that made us think it was any less safe than any other hotel.

We didn't swim, but did sit around the pool area for a while one morning. the pool was clean and clear, the area around it clean and kept up. While we were there an employee of the hotel came through setting the area for the day, moving chairs into place at tables, etc. He checked the filers and pump. He wasn't intrusive about it, but did his job and I liked knowing it was well maintained.

I'd say you do get what you pay for, but if you are looking for a clean place to stay for a reasonable cost, this fits the bill.

We had planned on staying a week but after 2 days we moved to a Hampton Inn which incidentally was the same price and was only 6 miles away. This hotel is completely run down. Attempts to repair the exterior and even in the room are evident everywhere. Amenities are a joke. Kleenex?...no box, but a small package of Kleenex. Shampoo in small packages and towels are worn out. If you stay here, bring your own pillows. We had to ask for 2 more pillows as the pillows are flat and hard. Fortunately they had a couple available. The carpets in the room was dirty. A few minutes walking on them with white socks turned my socks black. After that I would not walk on them without shoes. The continental breakfast consists of not so fresh donuts, bread and juice. Fortunately, there is a Denny's nearby. Eating breakfast at Denny's basically adds another $15 to the price of a night's stay. Don't count on internet as it is so slow it is impossible to use. The hotel attracts mainly families so the small pool was packed with kids and pretty much unusable by adults.

I am not sure what happened with the hot water for others, we had plenty of hot water, clean room, cold air. I stayed here for 4 nights, we had no problems, I saw some of the other hotels in the area, this by far was the best choice. Truemper Rd has cheap hotels, but you might not leave with everything you brought. VERY dirty area. Check out Red Roof, I will be back.
