“Excellent Service”
Reviewed January 22, 2014

This is not the first time we have stayed here, but it was definitely the BEST. Staff brought their "A Game" - super friendly and accommodating, especially Front Desk and Housekeeping. Room was immaculate. Agree with other reviewers that the beds and pillows aren't plush (pillows feel like flat foam) but did not prevent us from getting a good night sleep. Towels are wonderfully fluffy! Tip for the shower - turn on hot water first, then adjust with cold and you won't have any issues. Bear in mind this is a HISTORICAL hotel and will have its creaks and groans from time-to time (why do some guests forget that?). Doors tend to close noisily.
The pool was fantastic - just the right temperature, super clean, plenty of towels and lounge chairs and the staff came by to ask if we needed anything (much appreciated!). Not impressed with the workout area which was overly warm and only had a few machines; no free weights. The bowl of apples and oranges, however, was a nice touch :)
The courtyard is a pleasant place to lounge in the evening. There was a wedding one night and the staff assured us that the music would finish by 9:30 so it would not disturb other guests - very thoughtful!
We love The Menger! Charming old-world ambiance and the location can't be beat - in walking distance of everything.
Reservations made though the hotel website give you a myriad of options, from the standard AAA to Historical Hotels rates, plus their own specials - sign up for emails!
For anyone interested, we found the hallways to have a "presence", but nothing malevolent.

We stayed at the Menger over Christmas, it was an old 1880's hotel and located in the centre of San Antonio. It's close to everything and has a nice 'old feel' about the place. Though, the heater in our apartment wasn't working how a heater should, it would make noises through the ceiling vents, keeping us up and frankly a little cold. Not nice with a baby.

The shower pressure was poor and needs fixing (it was going everywhere but in the shower..) Considering we paid full price, if not a little more for the holidays(even after informing reception of our unpleasant stay) we would consider somewhere else next time.

Room Tip: Make sure your heater and air-con works before you go to sleep, if not request another room !

The Ambience And Historical Atmosphere Were Awesome. The LobbyAnd Many Of The Public Areas Were Great. The Guest Rooms Were Small, Dingy And Musty. You Could Not Control Your Room Tempature. It Was Hot And When We Complained, We Were Told That The Heater Was On In The Hotel And They Had To Choose Between Heat And A/C. The Meeting Room We Used Smelled Like Sewage.

Stayed for my Birthday at the Menger and although our room was hidden in the back somewhere, it was a great room. The staff was great! Our breakfast there was awesome! Late at night, about ten o'clock, we had the munchies. We decided to order a tuna salad sandwich and share it. It was totally an awesome experience! With chips a pickle and soda, it made for a great meal. My wife wanted to take me to the Palm for my Birthday dinner...instead I decided to stay in the room and order each our own tuna salad sandwich! I made the right decision! We will be stopping by for another soon!

Room Tip: Request the floor and area you would like.

The Menger goes back to the 1880's. The old lobby is really cool and preserved. We didn't stay there but plan to on our next visit to SA. We hung out in the small bar which appears to be in original appearance or close to it. The only modern touch is a flat screen TV. Nothing special about the drinks but it's good for people watching. The hotel is decorated with dozens of photos and other artifacts of President Teddy Roosevelt, who recruited the Texas Roughriders at the hotel. Check out the classically decorated dining room.

We would like to thank you for taking the time to share your visit with Trip Advisor.

The Historic Menger Bar was originally built by 1887 as an exact replica of the House of Lords Pub in England. Major Hermann Kmpmann sent an architect to England and a new taproom was built in the Historic Menger Hotel. We are very proud of our efforts toward historic preservation and appreciate your recognition.

We hope when your travels bring you back to San Antonio, you will select the Historic Menger Hotel for your lodging.

The Wife and I celebrated our 3 year anniversary in the Presidential Suite! and I must say we really enjoyed the Hotel and staff. The Bar was great fun, and all the historic pictures and artifacts really gave you a sense of the many persons that had stayed there. Also A must, Explore the whole hotel - So much fun.

We had one of the best meals in Texas at this hotel just before Xmas. $20 per person for a superb lunchtime buffet. They food was excellent and we had a very nice waitress looking after us. Not once did we have to ask for a water top up, or wait for plates to be removed. Her attention was excellent and was without intrusion. The meal was amazing value , the choice was endless and the dinning room was very busy. It was worth going away for 1 hour and coming back. we nearly spent the one hour in the model shop located in the hotel. it was simply yummy and we are still talking about it. GREAT value
