Stayed at The Menger for an overnight. Staff was very nice and hotel has a lot of beautiful memorabilia of Texas early history. Right next door is the Alamo. Rooms were nice but not fancy, Breakfast was extensive but a little pricey even by hotel standards. I would definitely stay here again, maybe a romantic weekend next time.

Room Tip: Some rooms overlook the Alamo, purchase tour tickets at hotel it's just easier. everything withi...

The only reason I rate this hotel as average is because customer service sucked. The hotel grounds and history is phenomenal UNTIL you get poor customer service from Valet to the front desk supervisor, we had our rehersal dinner here this past weekend along with blocking 15 rooms, which they all booked and then some and still BAD customer service saddes part is we're locals so I can imagine why they think they can get away with their inept customer services, I guess because they get away with it with the real tourist.

Room Tip: Rooms with a Balcony have awesome views, plus hearing the horse carriages really does transport you...

The Menger is a lovely old hotel. Our room was in the original part of the building and was very nice, nothing too fancy, but comfortable. Some of the odd things were the step up into the bathroom (chich could have been dangerous in the middle of the night but never posed a problem thankfully) and the height of the ceilings, although there was a fan so we were comfortable temperature wise. We did not have much of a view, so if that's important to you, ask when booking. The lobby is beautiful and we were there at Christmas time so the tree was lovely and the open lobby so you can see up and down all three floors was impressive. We ate in the dining room for lunch on Saturday and the buffet was very nice, the bread pudding is amazing!!!! They make it with croissants I'm told. You are literally steps away from the Alamo and the Riverwalk so if you're doing San Antonio on foot, this is the place to stay. It was a little spendy for what the room provided but the location and the history are what you're paying for. Parking is valet only and it's a zoo, so be prepared to wait for your vehicle and pay $28 a day to park it. Valet and Front Desk Staff were friendly, but the wait staff and housekeeping were awesome! Only real complaint turned into staff was the water temperature in the bathroom, was all over the map, but that made for short energy conserving showers!

Room Tip: As for a view if you are not happy with looking at the building across the walk!

We spent two nights and had a great experience. The hotel location could not be better. The hotel is located next to the Alamo and across the street from the river walk.

The hotel is a historic gem with great old pictures and historical memorabilia. The Menger was built in 1858 by German immigrant William Menger. It was expanded many times over the years. By the 1870's it was one of the best known hotels in the southwest. Several presidents and lots of famous people have stayed at the hotel over the years including Teddy Roosevelt. On one occasion Teddy recruited some of his Rough Riders for the Spanish-American war. Be sure to visit the Menger Bar which is a reproduction of a famous bar in London. The Menger Bar (not surprisingly) was also one of the hang-outs for Teddy and his Rough Riders.

Don't miss the old three story lobby in the oldest section of the hotel. While we were there this was the location of the Hotel's two story Christmas tree.

As there are several sections of the hotel which were built at different times there is a lot of variation in the rooms so you should consider that when booking. We stayed in the oldest section of the hotel (by choice). Our room was slightly smaller than most new hotel rooms, but filled with character. The furniture and bed were comfortable and in good condition. For those who prefer larger rooms try a suite or room in the new section of the hotel.

Room Tip: Consider staying in the new section of the hotel if you a not comfortable with smaller rooms that ar...

Top of the line experience that combines our great National history and a superb staff! One of the coolest hotels we have ever stayed in from the front door to the departure. It was like stepping back in time; a quick facing movement and you are at the gates of the Alamo!

Room Tip: Any room in the historic section. The renovated rooms lack a little character.

I didn't stay at the Menger while in San Antonio, but I stopped in the bar after visiting the Alamo. It's just a nice little bar (with amazingly cold beers), but it's where Teddy Roosevelt recruited for the Rough Riders in the Spanish-American War. Some good pictures and memorabilia in various cases. I loved it!

The Menger Hotel was very pleasant to stay at. The attention to preserving the hotel's historic character was very nice and added a different touch to one's stay at this hotel. The room was very comfortable and the hotel's location adjacent to The Alamo made it easy to access all of the touristic attractions. The shops on the first floor were interesting and the hotel staff was pleasant as well. The brunch was a bit pricey but did have a big variety. If you are into history and don't mind staying at a hotel with an older touch to it, then the Menger Hotel is good for you. The outside garden was a great place to have a cigar and to contemplate along the beautiful garden.
