Although the price looks reasonable I had been wondering about the parking. I emailed them first and no response but my school booked me anyway.

There is NO parking except for Valet parking thats all you can have. $25 a day plus tips and I had to wait 35 minutes to get my car on the saturday I checked out.

They nickel and dime you to death - no free calls either.

The rooms were ok and there's a pool but much better hotel choices in downtown SA

Historical is charming when you are able to get a good night's sleep. The rooms and the furniture in them were worn out (the mattress and seat bottoms in the two chairs) and no luggage stands. [We stayed in the old section of the hotel, which is no excuse for worn out furniture.]

If you have any business to do, there is no business center. There are 1 or 2 guest computers in the lobby and a charge for printing.

FREE WiFi in the lobby and free internet in the room was a plus.

We were with a group of friends and we all agreed the food was "just ok" There are many places to eat for a more reasonable price, all within walking distance. $14 for the breakfast buffet was too high for what was offered. Traditional and average Hotel breakfast buffet.. nothing special.

We were charged for coffee to-go after 9:30 AM. There is a Starbucks in the mall next door - 5 min. walk - recommended.

Overall, we agreed that The Menger was a nice hotel to visit, look at the photos that line the walls, tour the two main lobbies (which have a rather unpleasant bathroomish odor for some reason) and have a drink at the Menger Bar... then stay at another (newer) hotel for a good nights sleep, better service, fresh atmosphere and upgraded amenities.

The pros: It's right next to the Alamo, the building itself is lovely, and the rooms are large.

The cons: only one bath towel, just enough coffee in the room for one person, and no pen & paper in the room.

Sure, these "cons" are just pesky little items, but they represent an overall lack of attention to detail.

So, while the hotel is nice and supremely historic, they're using the hotel's history as a selling point and giving up something in the way of hospitality in exchange.

We stayed at the Menger Hotel for the AAPG Convention in San Antonio because my wife loves historic properties, and this hotel definitely met her requirements. The hotel has grown over time, with three distinct sections. Our section was built for the Hemisfair in the 1960's (?), and thus is the newest. Our room overlooked the Alamo, was of standard size, and had a small bathroom. Travellers who want large rooms and the most modern feel will not like the rooms. We opened the window in the evening, and all I could hear was the Lady Bird fountain and the clip-clopping of horses' hooves from the carriages that line up next to the Alamo--very few cars passed by on the quiet street. My wife the ghost hunter could find no spirits, but if you want spirits, go into the bar on the first floor. The woodwork was imported in the 1880's and Teddy Roosevelt spent a lot of time consuming spirits here with his Rough Riders. Historical displays and photographs abound, but it is the three story open lobby of the oldest part of the hotel that is the historic heart of the place. Next time we will get a room right off that old lobby for the true historic feel.

The pool was nice, very big, with many lounge chairs. In the next courtyard was their garden, which was a nice place to sit in a rocker and sip our evening drinks. Parking was overly expensive, and you should find a nearby cheap lot. Dinners in the hotel restaurant were not that great (my steak was tough, a poor cut), but the breakfast buffets were tremendous. The omelette lady was full of good advice on what to see and how to get there, and made excellent waffles too. Even if I wasn't staying there, I would go for the breakfast buffet.

The location was great, convenient to the Riverwalk, the Mall, and especially the Alamo. Late at night and before dawn there is no one around the Alamo, and you can contemplate the battleground that is the plaza in front of the site. The Convention Center is very close, easy walking. I have stayed at the Palacio Del Rios, the Hyatt Riverwalk, and another nearby hotel, and they too are well-located and far more modern, but the Menger has the historical aura that many tourists seek. But no ghosts.

Surrounded with History!!! Great Location. Across the street from the Alamo, and a Mall on the other; 1 Block from the Riverwalk.

This is a historic hotel so if your into modern surroundings this place is not for you. History surrounds the main lobby and on every wall. From this alone my stay was most enjoyable. As a solo traveler I found the staff (night security) most polite and helpful and made me feel right at home. One of the down sides was the pool was under construction and it would have been nice to have known this prior to my booking. It reopened on the day of my departure.

The rooms were dated and it would have been nice to have a room decorated with a theme that matched the time period the hotel was built in. I did not spend much time in my room during my 5 day visit, so it really was not a top priority. The next time I visit San Antonio I will most likely choose a different hotel because I like change, but it is worth it to stay there once and experience times gone by. I enjoyed my stay very very much.

As far as the ghosts, I stayed up till weee hours in the morning half way through my stay to persue an experience with one or at least to catch an orb on film. No such luck. I want to be a believer but as of right now, I am not. Its possible I was trying to hard. :)
Happy Travels

Excellent location right next to Alamo Riverwalk and Mall
Reception staff a little frosty, not the usual warm Texan welcome. Reception area fabulous swimming pool and garden really tranquil and peaceful.
Restaurant reasonable, breakfasts have plenty of variety, although my husband found the hot dishes were luke warm.
Room adequate not very big but no outside noise.
Would definitely stay here again.

I recently stayed at the Menger Hotel in March 2008 for a conference. This hotel is called historic which really means very old and outdated. I would not recommend staying at this hotel when San Antonio has so many wonderful hotels.

The staff were nice and location was great. Unfortunately rooms very small and dated, lobby was smoke filled at night, and everything old and small. The hotel sits right next to Alamo and right next to mall so close to riverwalk. However, there are better values in San Antonio.
