To truly enjoy Menger Hotel, you have to have an appreciation for historic hotels. I do. I was in San Antonio for a conference and needed a single room. It was an adorable room for only one or two people, smaller than your basic hotel room these days, and just right for me.

It was very comfortable and well appointed. The bathroom was contemporary but they made it look like it was older. The bed was luxurious. I enjoyed the restaurant for my breakfasts and they were yummy, healthy, and well priced.

It was SO much more interesting than the hotels where my friends were staying--rooms that could be anywhere. I was IN San Antonio, right by the Alamo, River Walk, and the beautiful conference center.

Like anything else in life, this hotel has it's good and bad. A breif recap:

Good
The hotel is certrally located in downtown San Antonio, so, with public transportation, you can let them park your car and leave it there.
The hotel overlooks the Alamo and is only a couple blocks from the Riverwalk.
The rooms were clean, and while not large, they were adequate for two people.
This is a beautiful, grand old hotel with a lot of character.

Other
There is no WiFi. It is not poor, it is non-existant.
The walls are paper thin. You can here folks talking in the next room in conversational tones. Anything else can also be readily heard.
The lighting was very poor for anything but sleeping.
There were minor repairs needed in the bathroom that had been haphazardly done.

We did not feel that we were getting what we had paid for and checked out two days early and chose a motel on the outskirts of town. It works better for us.

Room Tip: Look elsewhere

Loving Texas history, my family desired to stay at this beautiful inn. We loved the charming lobby, pool & garden, & historical photos. Although rooms were small, staff was helpful and cordial. Extra towels were readily provided.
Views from the room showed either an interior courtyard or the square adjacent to the Alamo. Nice to stay so close to main tourist attractions while enjoying a calm, peaceful atmosphere inside.
This weekend a "Toy Soldier" group held a conference & expo open to the public for a nominal charge at the hotel. We all enjoyed the miniature replicas of historical battles. I bought a couple of vintage 1st editions about the WWII Pacific battles, an area of interest for me.

Room Tip: Try a room in the original building above the restaurant.

Avoid this hotel.

The Wi-Fi Interent connection in the rooms does not work. Based on the previous posts and talking to the front desk, they have known about this problem for a long time. You need to go to the lobby for Internet and even there it is spotty. If you're on business and need to do work, you will be very disappointed.

The rooms are old and tired. Barely any art on the walls. Many of the people I was with (there was a conference) complained about no hot water in the showers especially if you are on the top floors. So, I got up at 5:30am to take a shower to make sure I had hot water.

The excuse is that the hotel is old. I've been in old hotels where everything worked fine. The owners of this hotel are a bunch of cheap [--]. The best thing to do is to avoid this hotel so their revenue plummets and they are forced to sell to someone who will put money into it. It has the potential to be a nice hotel.

You can't beat the location and the history of the hotel. Stayed there in November when I was chaperoning students for a journalism convention and I have to say as a history teacher, this place can't be beat. Located right next door to the Alamo, a bar (though moved from its original location) that housed Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders, makes for a historic hotel experience second to none. The only complaint was that the shower was a little temperamental but other than that, I loved the place. You really got a sense of history as you walked into the lobby and I would recommend the Menger if you want a different experience.

It is a historic hotel, in a great location. Next door to the Alamo! Walking distance to the Riverwalk and other attractions. You can pick up a tour bus, directly across the street or a horse and buggy ride. Nice garden area and pool area. The entire staff was nice. They do have a restaurant, but we did not try it. The room was adequate, bed was comfortable. It is more of a reserved hotel (quiet). We enjoyed our stay.

I recently stayed at the Menger for six nights in a single room and I was very impressed by the rooms, the restaurant and the staff. I did not think it was overpriced (but I booked well in advance) and the standard of service was excellent. My room was comfortable and very clean, with an excellent standard of housekeeping. I was especially pleased that I could control the air conditioning myself - not always the case. I enjoyed the meals in the restaurant and found the staff attentive and friendly.

I hope I can go back there someday - thanks for a great holiday.
