Great place to say if you like old-fashioned charm. A group of us stayed recently there for a convention, and the quality of the rooms was definitely mixed: one guy got unexpectedly upgraded to a suite; one had no hot water the first night. My room - 3066 - was fine. King bed, clean, and very quiet. Plus, good view out to the Alamo Plaza. Excellent price for the convenient location - just a block or so from the Convention Center and the Riverwalk. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful, and was attentive to the deficiencies, and the person without the hot water got moved. No refrigerators in the rooms -- you have to ask for one, and it will be delivered to your toom. The hotel has a nice outdoor, heated pool and workout center and interior courtyard. Breakfast buffet in the resaurant was a little pricy - $16.95 - but there was tons of fresh fruit and lots of variety. So much history: Carrie A. Nation left hatchet marks in the bar, Teddy Roosevelt was there, lovely oil paintings, and the feel of a solid historic hotel. Not the Grand Hyatt, but so much more cozy.

Famous historic hotel decorated beautifully for the holidays. The location is A+-Very close to the River Walk, the Alamo and shopping. What's lacking is heat or air and your inability to adjust your own thermostat. We had elderly relatives in our party who were cold and others who were too hot. Also, the parking or lack thereof was not explained to us and is not explained on their website. Some of the rooms have quite a step between the bathroom and bedroom which was also difficult for older people. There was a definite lack of customer service in dealing with any of these issues. We received different explanations from everyone we spoke to. Buffet lunch on the weekends is excellent.

Room Tip: Ask for room close to elevator. Also there is a newer section,

I truly appreciate you taking the time to share your experience of your stay with Trip Advisor.

We regret that the ladies and gentlemen of our staff were not able to provide you with the correct information regarding our valet parking. We provide valet parking as a convenience to our guests and our fees are comparable to other area downtown hotels. There are several commercial parking lots within walking distance of the hotel for guests who prefer not to use the valet parking.

Your comments have been shared with our entire staff as reinforcement of our committment to exemplary service and please be assured that appropriate action has been taken to ensure that situations of this nature do not occur in the future.

We hope when your travels bring you back to San Antonio, you will once again choose the Historic Menger Hotel for your lodging.

The hotel is exactly what you expect for a historic hotel. Terrific building, lots to learn about and you feel the history all around. If you want generic cookie-cutter hotel, this is not for you. The bar is small and dark, which only makes it better for the history crowd.

If you must have a hotel with up-to-the-minute decor, this hotel is not for you. But if you love to stay in a historic building that oozes charm, you will love the Menger. The location is perfect, with easy access to the Alamo (next door) and the River Walk. The rooms are a bit dated, but they are clean and the beds are very comfortable, and everything works. The Colonial Restaurant, located in the hotel, is gracious and inviting, and the food is very good. A lovely garden just off the lobby is a perfect place to relax in sun or shade, and a pool is located in an adjacent courtyard. The staff is enormously friendly and helpful. Do check out the bar, where Teddy Roosevelt recruited his Rough Riders. The hotel is reputed to be haunted, but no spirits visited us during our stay. I would definitely stay here again. All of the other hotels in the area seem ordinary and uninteresting by comparison.

Room Tip: Some rooms have balconies, others do not. There is no safe or mini-fridge in the rooms.

Great historic hotel right beside the Alamo site. New comfortable bedding and decently maintained for a very old hotel. Recommended for the ambiance and location. Great outdoor pool area with fitness facilities. A beautiful old antique bar in the Menger Bar, worth the stop for a late night beverage. Recommended over the sterile and cold new hotels in the area, but with the age and character does come older and smaller rooms.

Also, easy to find your hotel after a night on the town. Remember the Alamo....

Room Tip: Rooms facing the north do tend to be noisier as the horse carriages click by at night. all other ro...

I'd always wanted to stay here and I wasn't disappointed! The whole place was just beautiful and so steeped in Texas history. Our bed was beyond comfortable; we didn't want to get out of it! Also, both the valet and front desk service were so friendly and helpful. Every request was met with a smile.

Breakfast in the Colonial Dining Room while pricey, was superb! We loved that the hotel was central to everything. Our trip involved following the Texas Independence Trail so it was great being right across the street from the Alamo but it was also only a block and a half from the Riverwalk. I can't wait to come back!
