“brunch at the Menger Hotel”
Reviewed November 25, 2012

From the moment my wife and I entered the dinning room we were very much impressed by not only the food display, but with the live back ground music of a solo guitarist. As we sat enjoying our breakfast and drinking our coffee, I finally decided to go and introduce myself and complement the "maestro" on his music. He in turn, not only introduced himself to me as Fernando Santafe, but he also dedicated and played a popular melody to my wife, Maria Alma, at table side. Don Fernando and Leonora, our waitress, certainly provided us with a very pleasant and memorable Sunday morning experience at the Menger Hotel. These two individuals displayed the best attributes that the Manger Hotel can take to the bank. Thank you,
guys, Luis Arturo, author "Moyeboy-51" and Maria Alma Jimenez from San Antonio.

This could be a beautiful historic hotel with a couple million dollars worth of renovations. But as it is - it's just old. The carpets are stained. The wall paper is stained. The TVs are ancient. The air is rich with the smell of thousands of cigarettes - despite no one having smoked inside in years.

It is a seriously cool hotel though - filled with neat antiques and some fascinating bits of American history. It's in an absolutely ideal location. The architecture is gorgeous. It's just in need of some serious TLC.

I was a guest from Nov 16-18, 2012.

The hotel is rich with history given its 150+ year age. Location is great and right next to the Alamo and a little over a block to the best part of the Riverwalk. Close to lots of shopping. The courtyard pool is large although I don't know if it is heated since I didn't use it. A beautiful second courtyard has a garden that would be great to sit in and enjoy, reading a book perhaps. Quick and efficient valet and bellboy service. $30 /day to valet which, given available parking in the area, is really the only option. Unfortunately, the good ended at the ground floor for me.

I could only get full bars on my iPad and PC WiFi devices if I stood at the door to my room. No bars at the little desk in the room. Even when standing in the hallway the bandwidth was so limited that I couldn't even get email. Web browsing was out of the question. I asked the front desk who stated that other guests were also complaining and they had the "IT guys" on it. Nothing in that respect changed in the 3 days I was there. Even in the middle of the night I had no Internet.

The room was bland and looked old. Furnishings were well worn. TV was an original model apparently from the 20th century and unacceptable to me. No mini bar. They did provide $8 bottled water and a free coffee maker. The view from my 4th floor room of the large pool and patio courtyard was OK. A room overlooking the garden courtyard would have been nicer for me.

The room was clean. The bedding and pillows were average. A/C worked fine although it was not perfectly quiet.

Compared to 2 other hotels I have stayed at, which were right on the riverwalk, this comes out in third place. I won't stay here again. I consider it poor value even though I was supposedly getting a half price rate. I wish I could give a better review.

Great location. Our room had a balcony that over looked the pool area. Very pretty. The grounds and gardens were beautiful. Breakfast buffett had many delicious choices and the dining room was very elegant . All staff was very courteous and helpful. The hotel is historical and old so if you want modern and trendy, not the place to stay. Shower had very little water pressure. Shower head low on wall so if your tall you have to bend under it. Hotel is in a nice location and across the street from Alamo. Short walk to river walk. Would stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with balcony overlooking pool.

Great location, on point service and a proper way to enjoy San Antonio. We booked a standard room and benefited from a Suite upgrade that served up plenty of elbow room and a very nice pool courtyard view. Our interaction with the team on site was limited but always positive; especially the valet who were kind enough to retrieve items left in the car more than once. We also really appreciated the historical flavor and classic hospitality.

Room Tip: Suites are very nice

The Menger is simply the best hotel for customer service that I have ever been to. My husband & I have been staying here anytime we are in San Antonio for over 30 years & it just gets better with time. We love the pool & gardens, but the staff is simply the best. The rooms were nice & the beds were very comfortable. The location is perfect to walk everywhere - The Alamo is right next door, the Riverwalk is across the street, and El Mercado is about 7 blocks. We ate at their restaurant for the first time & the food was great & very reasonable.

Room Tip: Go for the rooms with a balcony overlooking the pool. Awesome!
