Let's start with a summary- if you want the Marriott, stay at the Marriott. If you want history, location, and a great price (but are willing to make some accomodations), stay here.

We chose this hotel because we didn't want to stay in a cookie-cutter hotel room for our stay in historic San Antonio. We expected the slightly worn decor, the overall old feel of the hotel. It's over 150 years old, after all!

Although we asked for a balcony room overlooking the pool, we were placed in a king room. It's hard to complain when your view is of the Alamo, but still we weren't pleased. I spoke to the clerk and he made excuses about his manager not being able to accommodate us. Unfortunately I don't think Ian is long for the Menger when he throws his manager under the bus! We were able to move, thanks to the friendly clerk Jesus, but not until the next day.

Just a note if you are looking for the bigger rooms- there are NOT king-sized beds in the larger balcony rooms. Only two double beds. Keep that in mind when you book your room. And remember that the size of the rooms is set to 1850 standards- very small!

The second room was much larger, and newer (though would still benefit from an upgrade). Even though the decor could use an update the beds were new and super comfortable. No complaints there! The balcony was great and overlooked the beautiful pool area.

The hotel is central to everything. Across the street from the Alamo, and to the River Center Mall. A block from the River Walk. a 15-minute walk to the King William District and a 20-minute walk to Market Square. It's all right there.

Meals in the Colonial room are also great- we had a wonderful breakfast on a week day and the prices were fair.

We'll definitely stay here again. Next time we'll be prepared to ask for the right room, and we'll relax. The laid-back Texan/Southern pace can be hard to tolerate as a fast-paced Yankee! But you're on vacation so relax, and enjoy this gem!

Room Tip: Ask for the balcony rooms- but remember they only come in two doubles or two queens- no king beds he...

If you like old hotels with lots of history this is a great place to stay. Their pool is big and nice with poolside service and the spa isn't fancy but I got a wonderful massage while there.

Location and history are the best reasons to stay here. The room we had was tiny, which is the only negative we expierenced besides the $25 @ day parking expense. The restaurant was excellent and the Pub on the property was small, but friendly. We did have a problem with our shower being consistant...sometimes it would go to ice cold and then shoot to scalding...you might inquire if that has been fixed when you check in.

Room Tip: Best to ask for a small suite than a single room.

We got what we wanted. A historic room in a historic hotel in a historic location. The atrium was just awesome. You could just imagine yourself at a grand gala. If you want your ego stroked, go across the street. There are plenty of places where the amenities go on and on. We were happy.

Room Tip: Get out, great restaurants on the River Walk

A wonderful location next door to the Alamo and a beautiful historic hotel -- we stumbled in off the street without reservations and were lucky enough to score a room at a decent price -- less than some of the chain motels out on the interstate. I agree, the bathroom was small and dated, the carpets were old and probably needed better vacuuming in the corners. But for us, all that was outweighed by the atmosphere of this grand old hotel (not to mention the fact that the beds were comfortable and the wifi worked).

We spent a happy hour wandering around, enjoying the architecture and the antiques, and even had a very good Valentine's Day dinner in the restaurant. In the end we were happy to pay for the parking and to find our own breakfast in the morning -- we had a great time and would gladly stay there again.

Initially we were a little disappointed by the tired-looking bathroom but the bedroom and the downstairs, particularly the old part grew on us....we stayed two nights. Great bar with lots of history...Teddy Roosevelt recruited his Rough Riders there....lovely patio for having breakfast outdoors and the whole thing is right across the alley from the Alamo!

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the old part.

The Menger Hotel is a historic gem. The location across from the Alamo and on an 'arm' of the Riverwalk makes it a great place to stay in San Antonio. The rooms were clean and well appointed and larger than I expected for an old hotel. We had a balconey facing the pool which was nice but in the future I would ask for one overlooking the Alamo. The food in the dining room was good and the bar is not to be missed for the historical value. If you want something different with a true San Antonio feel, this is the place
