“Amazing hotel that takes you back in time.”
Reviewed April 16, 2011

Although this was my 4th stay at the Menger, it was the first visit for my cousins and they were blown away. It's like the best history refresher you could experience. Not only were our rooms in the old section but one of them was next to the Gen. William T. Sherman Suite. The beauty and elegance of this hotel has been so well maintained and the staff is competent. The Colonial Room is a wonderful restaurant and the best mango ice cream. You can't beat the location with the Alamo on one side and the Rivercenter Mall on the other and the Riverwalk just a short walk away. I've stayed at several other hotels in San Antonio but the Menger is my favorite by far.

Room Tip: A room in the old section overlooking the street

Alejandro the security guard gave our party a wonderful tour of some of the original suites. He was well versed in the history and soooo generous with his time. You can tell he loves his job and the Menger. You should double his salary!

A stay at The Menger, right next to the Alamo is a must for at least one visit to San Antonio. The historic hotel is clean and comfortable with an excellent dining room. It is close to the River Walk and the convention center.

Room Tip: Get a suite, the rooms are on the small side.

We stayed at the Menger hotel while attending a conference in San Antonio. It's location is great, next to the Alamo. The hotel bar is historic and the lobby is beautiful with authentic classic Victorian fittings,

However, the bedrooms also have Victorian fittings and plumbing. OK, so that's what you get in an historic hotel. However, the rooms are not clean, the beds are uncomfortable and the rooms are noisy from some badly installed air conditioning.

Next time I went to San Antonio I would stay elsewhere and visit the Menger to sample the atmosphere in the bar, lobby and restaurant.

I love historic hotels and really am sad to have to write such a negative review of the Menger but the owner/ management absolutely needs to get with it and totally renovate an entire wing of this hotel. The Menger could be a truly special place in a great city, but sadly it is not.
My husband and I stayed here for three nights on a spring break trip with our two teenagers. I chose this hotel for the location and for the historic character; I typically like older hotels with their high ceilings and ambience over the more contemporary style. It certainly did not pay off in this case! We had requested historic rooms, but these were all taken. We were sent down the hall to a "newer" wing - it was a dingy, dirty, awful room. The blue carpet was tattered, there was visible mildew on the shower curtain, rust imbedded in the ceiling sprinklers, terrible grout around the tub, and, worst of all, the wall air conditioner unit was dripping water causing an ever-enlarging wet circle on the carpet and thoroughly wet walls all around it. Our kids were in a connecting room which smelled overwhelmingly moldy. It was very late, so we slept there but asked for a different room the next day. Still no historic or refurbished rooms. They simply moved us down the hall to a roughly equivalent, though drier, room.
This hotel is well-located - literally a few steps from the IMAX entrance to the Riverwalk Mall quickly getting you onto the Rivewalk and across the street from the Alamo. The lobby spaces and breakfast room are nice and the personnel we encountered were just fine - particularly Rosemary in the breakfast room - a real delight. The historic Menger Bar is REALLY historic - also tiny, extremely dark and uncomfortable. The Menger could and should preserve this historic space, but they definitely need to add a lovely, comfortable lounge to one of their lobby spaces.
In short, if they can't guarantee you a refurbished room, go almost anywhere else. The two other nearby historic hotels, the Julia Morgan and the Crockett, I'm sure would have been better choices. To the Menger management: please renovate!

Room Tip: Accept only a guarantee of a refurbished room.

My husband and I were without our children for Thanksgiving and we decided to stay in a historic, San Antonio Hotel for our holiday "alone". We chose The Menger, and; we are very happy with that decision. Before our stay, I sent a couple of requests- via email- (room preference, etc.) on the hotel's website. Patty Cuellar (Revenue Manager), replied immediately and told us that we would be taken care of. She wasn't lying! Our experience, from valet parking to check-in; then, finally-check-out; everything about our stay was wonderful. We had expressed our desire for a "special" room, in the "original" part of the hotel...with a view. To our surprise and absolute delight, we were given the "Mae West Suite", which was a very large, comfortable room which overlooked the gardens. Being part of the original hotel, the room was adjacent to the rotunda which, at that time of year, was decorated for Christmas, complete with a HUGE Christmas tree which reached upwards- through the middle of the rotunda. We were able to simply walk out of our door, and see everything- from the beautiful, antique railings. We absolutely loved The Menger! Staying there was the highlight of our Thanksgiving!

We stayed here for two nights. The customer service at the front desk was helpful!! It was the valet/bellmen that needs a teaching on customer service. I understand they were overwhelmed by it being spring break and busy, but it's no excuse to treat guest with vulgar langauage. They were disorganized on how they handled the taxi cabs with their guest. We asked for a cab before some people and they were giving our cabs away. We confronted them and one of the valet/bellmen told us "What the F----"!! That's how we roll here!!! I couldn't believe what I was hearing!! I've stayed at this hotel multiple times and I have to say the last two times has not been a great experience! It's ashame because it's a beautiful historical hotel and convenient to most of everything!!!
