Great location. Steps away from the Alamo, River Center Mall and and the San Antonio Riverwalk. The Via Trolley is out the front door. It's an inexpensive way to get around the downtown area. Try the lunch buffet in the Colonial Dining Room.
Our room on this trip was located in the rear, not a pretty view. If possible request a room facing the front or the Alamo.

My colleague and I had a two-day conference in San Antonio at the Conference Center just two blocks from the Menger. A room was booked for us ahead and time and when we arrived, the staff was so overwhelmed with the spring break crowd they didn't know what to do.

First, they didn't have a 2 bed room for us. They gave us suite with one king-sized bed and brought in a very uncomfortable rollaway for one of us to sleep on. The room was historical but the bedrooms were in need of upgrading.

The next day they moved us into another room and that was in bad need of upgrading especially the bathroom. I slip across the bathtub as I stepped into it to shower as they didn't even provide a tub mat.

Then we went to check out and they said we had booked for another night and they would have to charge us for early check out. I then insisted on talking to the manager and told him we had only booked for 2 nights. He waived the fee and settled the bill for us giving a receipt that had our names on it and someone else's name who we did not know.

When I got back to Colorado, I checked my credit card the following day and there was a $309 holding charge. I called the hotel and talked to the controller who said our room was still being held and we were being charged for it! Luckily, the controller apologized profusely and corrected the issues and said someone how this other name got on our bill too.

Additionally, there internet didn't work well at all so not a good place to stay for business trip.

It may be a historial hotel right across from the Alamo and close to the River Walk but at $136/night I would recommend never staying here!

This was a combo business/pleasure trip that my wife and I took in mid-March.
After reading some recent reviews, I was a little apprehensive about staying at the Menger, but I got a great rate since it was the convention hotel.
First of all, as some of the reviews have stated, it is an old hotel. There was exposed pipe coming out of the ceiling, the room was small and the bathroom was dated. If I didn't know better, I would think it was over 150 years old. Oh nevermind that last statement. It was built in 1859. Also, we never saw a ghost.
Now for the positives.
The location was as good as it gets. We were literally a 50 yard walk across the street from the Alamo. In the other direction, you could be in the RiverCenter Mall with a 100 yard stroll. The Riverwalk area could be accessed in minutes. Walk out the lobby and across Alamo Plaza and you were at the San Antonio Visitors Center. A short trolley ride away was the King William district. This hotel is in the middle of everything. The location would get a 6 if that was possible.
The room was clean, the bed was comfortable and the service was excellent. I really enjoyed a walk around the hotel looking at the memorabilia of historic figures who graced the hotel. There was a Teddie Roosevelt/Rough Rider display, pictures of Mt. Rushmore creator Gutzon Borglum and rooms with names like the Roy Rogers Suite. The Victorian Lobby was impressive and the pool/courtyard area was very nice. In the evening, a piano player entertained those who wanted to sit and relax.
The meals we had were catered for the convention, but they were prepared by the hotel staff and were delicious. The valet staff was very helpful and the reception area was staffed by very friendly people.
If you want a new hotel, you probably wouldn't be happy here. If you can look past the limitations that age places on some areas, want a great location and great staff, then you will enjoy the Menger.

The location cannot be beat. Next door to the Alamo and public transportation to major attractions is at the doorstep. The hotel is also next to a major shopping mall and easy access to the Riverwalk. The hotel is lovely and historic. It has a nice heated pool and limited exercise equipment. Valet parking and fairly good service. We did not use the reastaurant at the hotel but it looked nice. We stayed at the Menger before and had rooms in the newer portion. This time we were in the older portion and although charming - it was tiny! I mean move your bags so you can get out of bed tiny. Really SMALL! Still, we love the hotel and would stay there again. I think it it a really good value for the money!

The Menger is in a fantastic location. Close to the tourist center, attractions, Riverwalk, ice cream store and across from the Alamo. Beautiful hotel to walk around in. So many historic items to look at. The pool area is very nice as well. The room was OK.

funny thing - as we were at the airport today, i was telling my fiancée that the only good thing about the menger was the free wireless. and, there it was - the most recent review said the same thing. having dispensed with the one positive (maybe two if you count location, though, trust me, the area around the alamo is not the calmest part of san antonio - it's only good because it's near the principal attraction), let me move on to the main event.

parking: $25 for valet parking (there is, apparently, no self-parking). however, the valets park it in an outdoor public lot one block down and if you self-park there it is only $5 - or so the sign said). what a rip off.

check in: the woman who checked me in on saturday (19 february) evening was about as abrupt and unhelpful in her rapid-fire, rote memorization recitation of everything she handed me. she seemed almost put off that she actually had to check me in.

room: let's start with room #1 which was in the "new" part of the hotel. first off, this room, while large, had a very creepy feel to it. sparsely and tackily furnished, it lacked any semblance of charm and was dirty, to boot. i had specifically asked for an updated room (as per advice in an on-line review), and if this was their idea of an updated room, the menger is about three decades behind the curve. i called the front desk and explained that i had requested an updated room. the clerk responded that i probably wanted to be in the original part of the hotel and he could take care of that. okay, that sounded good (and, by the way, he was an improvement over the woman who checked us in). i went downstairs and swapped keys. we went to our room in the original part of the hotel, only to find that it was a bit smaller than room #1, but just as declassée and in even worse condition (if that was possible). paint peeling off of walls; rusted pipes; a musty odor (though not the cat urine reported by others); perhaps the cheapest accoutrements money could buy. oh yeah, needless to say, the housekeeping quality was on par with room #1 (dirty beyond acceptable). a la quinta inn or red roof inn or something like that would probably have been a vast improvement. no joke. but it gets worse (or better, depending on your perspective): the bed skirt was torn and had a big weird stain on it (burn mark? something else that i did not want to think about?) then there was the bed: this might have been the most uncomfortable sleep the two of us have had in a long time. it's not that the bed was lumpy, but it had a sort of quality about it that lacks description other than to say that it did not pass the sleep test. the paper thin walls, of course, did not help our sleep as we heard every conceivable noise throughout the night (and, no, these noises were not caused by the "ghosts" that every historic hotel claims to possess). honestly, we could not wait to get up, shower (and the very outdated shower which changed temperatures when my fiancée flushed the toilet - what, no copper pipes? - was pretty consistent with every other feature of the room), and get out of there. fast.

the menger is part of the historic hotels of america. we have stayed at a few of these - the hermitage in nashville is absolutely first rate. the union in nashville and the capitol in little rock are also very good hotels. this one, it has to be said, is a total dump. i think it might have been better for all concerned if this place had closed up shop, turned itself into a museum to its once glorious past, and never admitted another guest after, hmmm, maybe mae west stayed there in the 1930s.

so much will need to be done to improve this place that it might be better to just gut it and start from scratch.

The hotel is very well kept up and staff are very friendly. We unfortunately had a very small room when we first arrived. We were struggling to maneuver around with all of our luggage and our son's crib. We were very fortunate to work with Bradley, one of the managers, to sort out the issue. He listened to our concerns and worked with us to get into a larger room at the same rate. He was extremely supportive of our needs and requests. He was a great manager and definitely displayed some good old fashioned customer service. I guess it's fitting for this old fashioned (fancy old fashioned) hotel. Overall, great stay.
