La Quinta Inn & Suites San Antonio Riverwalk
Ranked #54 of 357 Hotels in San Antonio
Reviewed November 5, 2012 via mobile

Anyone that has stayed at a La Quinta knows that it very well might be a motel with the hallways on the exterior... And considered to be a budget hotel...

This hotel is actually like a very nice... updated Holiday Inn Express. Granite countertop in bathroom, comfortable bedding, wall mounted thermostat, refrigerator, and microwave.

The hotel includes a very nice, complementary, continental breakfast. This includes waffles, eggs, sausages, cereal, yogurt, oranges, muffins, cereal, juice, milk, and coffee.

Parking is about $18.45 with tax. Valet is a couple dollars more. This is slightly less than other hotels in the same area.

The hotel is not on the riverwalk, but it is only a few blocks to the riverwalk and many other attractions.

Enormous suite rooms, actually. Mine had a living room with sink, microwave & fridge area + a large bedroom with a king bed as well as a large bathroom. Everything looked and smelled clean. I slept like a log on the bed.

Cross the street and through either the Marriott or the mall, and you're on the Riverwalk. Great location, friendly staff...When I went to buy a coke at the "market" near the front desk, they changed my bills for quarters & sent me to the vending machines. cokes are $1 cheaper there.

Having stayed in La Quinta inn in the Austin Capitol area I certainly did not find this version of La Quinta friendly at all. I admit, San Antonio is a totally different city full of way more tourists than Austin (I'm referring to the riverwalk experience), however, I felt like every time I asked something in the reception they were in a rush of "getting rid of me".
I specifically required a non-smoking room, and yet, the room smelled like cigarrettes all over it.
Not sure if I would stay again here though, the price is pretty reasonable and the location is excellent.

Lovely staff, clean rooms, good location. I would stay here again. It is located across from the River Center Mall, easy access to Riverwalk and walking distance to Alamodome . My friends and were comfortable and enjoyed our stay.

I stayed at the La Quinta Convention Center simply because it was the location of a conference at which I was an attendee. Overall the experience was good. The rooms were fairly standard, maybe a little out dated in some decor, but overall nice. The beds were comfortable, shower was good... the things you really need in a conference hotel. The Riverwalk is just across the street and through another hotel. While it might have been nicer to be right on the water, the La Quinta was plenty close and minus the noise and extra expense. Because it was a conference, we spent a decent amount of time at the 501 Lounge/Bar and I have to say it was one of the better hotel bar experiences I have had. It didn't seem like the place that non-hotel patrons were going, but the girls behind the bar were really friendly, and worked hard to make sure we were taken care of. They got to know our names, seemed interested to know why we were in town and even remembered what we were drinking from the night before - definitely made our stay more enjoyable.

This La Quinta means well but is showing its age. Not so much in its upkeep, as the place was clean and reasonably well maintained, and the rooms were large though utilitarian.

Rather, it showed its age in smaller touches such as the lack of electrical outlets at tabletop level at the undersized table in the room; the fact that the electrical outlets near the table, all two of them, and both occupied by plugs powering various things on the table, were located at floor level so that you had to grovel about to plug in and unplug things; and the fact that those sockets were not powered at all until I discovered that they were (weirdly) switched on and off at the entry light switch, thus meaning that charging items from these outlets while sleeping necessitated unscrewing a light bulb. Plainly, the hotel dates from a pre-computer age where no traveler would think of bringing any electrically powered device with them. Likewise, no easily accessible sockets near the night-stands.

The staff were reasonably competent and not unfriendly, though somehat lacking in basic room maintenence training in the area of checking whether the bedside clock was correctly set. I was much inconvenienced by the fact that mine was set precisely two hours slow, so I very nearly missed the start of an important conference at the convention center. Yes, I was an idiot to rely on the hotel's clock, I admit it! But still!

Speaking of the convention center, it's a five-minute leisurely stroll away; very convenient. The Riverwalk is likewise close by, as is the Alamo, where you can admire the Alamo museum's collection of Bowie knives with coffin handles, a level of explicitness now mostly confined to the legal profession.

Breakfast is free and generous though uninspired - highly processed carbs of all kinds, mystery scrambled eggs, and even more mysterious sausage-y objects swimming in grease. No fresh fruit, or even unfresh fruit; and lovers of tradition and OCD-ers in general will be glad to know it's exactly the same every morning. Internet was free and available wirelessly via two names, La Quinta and Laquinta, only one of which actually worked. I did not find wired connections (greater security), perhaps because I was sick of groveling around under the room's table to locate sockets.

A bar (the 501) opens in the evening and offers basic bar snacks and reasonably priced adult beverages in a somewhat dispirited atmosphere reminiscent of eastern Europe, enlivened a bit by some intriguing and well-executed original paintings of musicians caught in the act.

All told, a solidly middle of the road experience that the owners could elevate by a star or so by recognizing that modern travelers need convenient access to electrons, and lots of them. Keeping the clocks on time would not be a bad idea, either.

I had some doubts after reading some of the reviews. I was pleasantly surprised. This is a very nice hotel, and of course, pet friendly which is a huge plus for pet owners. We were in SanAntonio for the ATCE Expo and my husband was able to walk a couple of blocks and he was at the convention center. There is a Macy's across the street which takes you right to the Riverwalk. The Grand Hyatt and Mariott and all right here too, but for people not on a expense account, this hotel is for you.
