“A taste of Mexico North of the Border”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

My wife and I discovered Dona Tota when we visited Ciudad Victoria, Mexico many years ago and fell in love with the quirky little restaurant located down a quaint residential street. For years we would travel to Ciudad Victoria just to go and have gorditas at Dona Totas and you can imagine our delight when we discovered one in San Antonio. The atmosphere of course is not like the original but the gorditas were pretty close to the true and authentic flavor we were used to. Hot, sloppy, and delicious. If you want a true taste of Mexico this is the place.

“Authentic is right!”
Reviewed July 19, 2012

This place is very authentic& family friendly. You walk up and order at the counter and they call you when your order is ready for pickup.
The food is simple but good. Gorditas made fresh by hand right behind the counter where you can see. Major variety of fillings and a few different sides to choose from.

“Authentic and good for the price”
Reviewed February 14, 2012

This is a very simple place and is a chain in Mexico. The gorditas are small, but that is how they are in Mexico: prices range from $1.60 up depending on which filling you order. I love the simple picadillo with a glass of iced tea. The size is bigger than a half dollar, as one other reviewer reported: About 5" before being folded and filled with your goodies. I usually go here for a quick snack; if you want a large meal, this could get expensive for this simple type of food. I think of it as Mexican tapas. For what I get and the excellent flavor, I give it 3 stars.

“Small and Pricey”
Reviewed August 5, 2010

I went here and the gorditas were good. However, they were about the size of a silver dollar....tiny and around $1.80 each. I also ordered a side of rice, which came in a condiment size foam container. I will not return.

“Gorditas may be authentic Mexican but not good food”
Reviewed July 11, 2009

We love gorditas and have had them across the southwest. A couple of years ago, we had the best gorditas at a mexican food stall at "El Mercado" in San Antonio. We made a detour this year to stop to have gorditas at Dona Tota. Although there were a lot of choices of fillings and the ones we tried tasted good, the gorditas were terrible. They were small, tough and tasteless. They did not taste like they were deepfried because there was no crunch or any of the rich fried taste. There are no add ons like lettuce, tomatoes or even cheese. They were like eating leather coasters with tasting meat filling. We were disappointed and won't come back because if you don't care for the gorditas, there is no other choices on the menu except a couple of sides (rice & beans).
