“Very Nice, but small room”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 10, 2011

This hotel was very nice. The staff are courteous and helpful. The housekeeping is a little under par and we had to request some basic items to be replenished. The location is great, quite rooms, perfect for walking to just about anything you want to do. The breakfasts and KickBack(happy hour) were much nicer than expected. Lots of room to gather. Our only complaint is the room we had was VERY SMALL. We had requested a two room suite with two beds as we were meeting our son, his wife and baby. We wanted to be able to let the baby sleep while we were in the "living room". The bedroom was so small there wasn't even room for the crib. You cold not walk on both sides of the beds. The crib had to go in the living room that was also extremely small. This caused some discomfort, and yet I recommend the hotel over all. The nice pool(s) hot tubs and atmosphere were so nice and the people were so nice the small room was tolerable. Just when you book make sure you get room dimensions if you need space.

Room Tip: Stay in the renovated tower.

This was our first stay with Drury. Even so, they upgraded us to a suite and they made us feel like VIPs in many other ways. We had very good housekeeping service. The building is a beautiful, interesting restoration of an old bank building, but nothing seemed "old". Great location, directly on the riverwalk. The afternoon snacks and drinks were a very nice touch and the buffet breakfast was better than average. The roof-top pool was a surprise, perfect on a hot day. All in all, we really enjoyed our stay.

This was our second stay at a Drury Plaza Hotel, and once again we were extremely pleased. The location was perfect and the hotel maintains high standards in cleanliness, service, and extras.

If your looking for free cheap food and three free cheap drinks every afternoon, this is your place. If you want a comfortable bed, clean towels and changed linens everyday, and no bugs...look elsewhere.

If you do elect to stay: ask for the Fernando Tower-it's renovated and "feels" newer and cleaner, unfortunately however the lack luster housekeeping will still be a part of your experience. First day of stay: came back to room, beds made-no top sheet! Second day: left early-came back at 2 pm: nothing done! Wedding at 6 pm! Called the desk and was told they were 'busy" and would I like someone to come "now"...yes, please. Two hours and two calls later and still no sign of anyone. Another call yielded fresh towels by 4, just barely time for the four of us to shower, dress and leave for a six pm wedding..

Building is historic, but that "charm" comes with everything you'd expect from an old building: odors, dirty carpets, and an overall sense of grime. Other wedding attendees (who had the misfortune of staying in the "older" part of the hotel) found a bed bug on their bag in the bathroom. Granted, no other bugs were found in the room or on the mattress, and no bites, but a bed bug is a bed bug-

DruryHotels, General Manager at Drury Plaza Hotel San Antonio Riverwalk, responded to this review, October 13, 2011
The Drury Plaza Hotel Riverwalk is a beautiful historic renovation of the previous Alamo Bank Building. Our purpose in preserving the building was to maintain as much of its original character as possible and our guests enjoy the history of the building. In addition, our guests truly enjoy our FREE evening Kickback which provides FREE hot food, FREE soft drinks and FREE adult beverages. All of our offerings during Kickback are of good quality and are consistently checked and evaluated for their quality. We do apologize if your room quality was not to your expectations. Each Drury Hotel has a Manager on Duty 24 hours per day who is at your service and able to assist our guests. Please call us at any time - we truly care about your comfort and appreciate your business.

The Drury is always impressively clean. The one exception to that rule during this stay was the carpeting in our room that could use changing due to numerous stains. But otherwise, the room was clean and well appointed. We did miss, however, not having an in-room safe.

The evening snacks are heavy -- hot dogs, baked potatoes with fixings, fried chicken strips, etc. The drinks are inexpensive and watery, but the beer is good. Morning breakfast is a full one, and soft drinks and coffee are available virtually around the clock for free.

Parking is $19 a day for valet service. Self-parking is not available.

The staff is exceptionally friendly and attentive. There were several times they went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable.

The rooftop pool and hottub are awesome. The views can't be beat. The hotel's location is central to everything -- the Alamo, Riverwalk, Majestic Theater and all the restaurants/shops/entertainment.

Overall, the Drury is an excellent value, and we'll be back.

We had planned to spend three nights in San Antonio in August and after reading many reviews on this site decided on this hotel. I am so glad we did because we loved it. Our room was in the San Fernando tower and had a spectacular view of the cathedral from our balcony. The building itself is charming and retains many of the features of the former bank building that it once was. Although it is a bit of a hike to get to the tower rooms, the rooms more than make up for it. Our room was huge and consisted of a living area with lovely furniture, a huge bathroom and separate bedroom with king size bed. There was plenty of wardrobe space, an iron an ironing board, kitchenette and coffee maker and mini refrigerator. We loved being able to sit on our balcony taking in the view. Each day that we went out it was so nice to come back to a beautifully cleaned, cool room. The building has an indoor an outdoor pool and we made use of both. There was also a great terrace on our level of the building but it was just a bit to hot while we were there to take advantage of it. All the staff were courteous and helpful. The breakfast buffet provided more than enough choice of the usual fruits, yoghurt, cereals, pancakes etc. The evening reception was ok if you were looking to save money but the food offerred didn't change from one night to the next and was predominantly fried, fast food type fare. There was a basic salad though. Each guest was entitled to three free alcoholic drinks which seemed quite generous. I suspect it could get very busy at peak times of the year but while we were there it wasn't too bad. The riverwalk area was much smaller than I had imagined and this hotel had direct access to it. We liked that security of the hotel in that you had to use your room key to operate the lift. When we travel we don't feel the need for valet service, hotel restaurants, room service or a stocked bar fridge as these all add to the cost and we would rather spend our money on other things. So if thats what you are looking for another hotel might suit you better, but for us the Drury Plaza was perfect.

We spent four days at the Drury and have nothing but god things to say about it. The location was perfect for our needs. It was only a short 10 minute walk to the market and less than that to the shops at the Riverwalk. Our room was nothing short of excellent. The bed was soft and comfortable, the room was spotless, linens were fresh, flat screen TV, good AC, and excellent maid service. The free breakfast was outstanding - sausage, eggs, biscuits and gravy, etc. The 5:30 kickback was nice also. Three free drinks per person along with hotdogs, chips, chicken fingers, etc was a great way to take a break from the heat outside.

However, the best part of our Drury experience was the service. I ave stayed in many hotels all over the world but have never had better service. Everyone from the manager to the housekeepers went out of their way to be polite. I was asked numerous time if their was anything else that would make my stay more enjoyable to just let them know. I want to give a out out to Hector especially for going out of his way make out trip special. We did not use the rooftop pool but it did look nice. We will definitely stay here again.
