“Nice, undisturbed area good for hiking and biking”
Reviewed May 23, 2013 via mobile

This State Natural Area has recently opened to overnight tent campers on Fridays and Saturdays only. With multiple mountain biking trails of varying difficulty to ride, GCSNA offers the right location no matter your biking skill.

What was lacking was better planning for the camping area. While the spaces themselves were nice and laid out well, the choice of ground cover for the tent pads left a lot to be desired. Choosing such a coarse crushed rock as the base for the tent pads was less than comfortable. Maybe this isn't an issue for those that travel with the kitchen sink and an air mattress, but those rocks killed my back and knees.

Bring a thick blanket and an air mattress and you'll enjoy your sleeping conditions as much as the riding conditions.

“Great place to hike, bike or connect with nature.”

Great trails for hikers and bikers of all levels. Pack your water and bring a camera. The scenery is great. Entry fee is around $6 per person.

“Geocaching 101”
Reviewed April 7, 2013

Saw a flyer announcement at REI San Antonio for a geocaching course given by Friends of Government Canyon (FOGC). Government Canyon is a State Park located northwest of San Antonio just outside Loop 1604. FOGC put on a superb presentation on the basics of geocaching. After a short power point introduction, there was a hands-on activity. Participants were able to use GPS units provided by FOGC to locate caches around the Visitor's Center. This is a great activity for families with young children as well for adults who want to add a new experience to their hiking or backpacking activities. This experience had us going back to REI to look at handheld GPS units for geocaching in the future.

“Fall Trek”
Reviewed October 28, 2012

Hike 2 of the canyons trails, making a huge loop back to the road. Trails are primitive, expect to get boot muddy. Great landscape of our Hill Country.
