My husband and I stayed there 4 days, while he was at a conference on the premises. We thoroughly enjoyed our time and surroundings while there. It is in a beautiful location right on the Riverwalk. We loved the rooftop pool too. All of the staff was excellent and very helpful. We would love the opportunity to visit again. Wendy R. NY state

My wife and I stayed one night at the Hotel Contessa for our wedding anniversary and we had a thoroughly enjoyable time and experience. The location and amenities are excellent and having River frontage is always a "plus" when staying in downtown San Antonio. We will definitely return!

Room Tip: The higher floors are better for noise abatement. Corner suites are large and sunny.

Hotel management staff: Shame on you for expecting your guests to sleep in rooms filled with paint and carpet glue fumes. Your lack of ethics and willingness to sacrifice the health and safety of your customers for profits is a disgrace to the hospitality industry. Safety aside, expecting people to pay hundreds of dollars to sleep in that stench is ghastly.

Prospective customers: The management of this hotel cares nothing for your health or safety. Although the paint and carpet glue fumes will dissipate, you’ll never be able to trust their food handling practices, that air filters will be changed regularly, or that hotel security will be taken seriously – this hotel’s leadership cares only about money and if they can cut a corner to save a buck, they will. Find another place to stay. Details below.

We arrived at the Contessa at 7pm on Memorial Day weekend after a 6 hour drive from Dallas. The woman at the front desk had a distracted and annoyed demeanor as she informed us that our room was not ready. Perhaps she was tired of explaining to guests who were promised a 4pm checkin that they could not check in till 8pm, 9pm, or later…. She didn’t even apologize.

She just explained that the hotel was undergoing renovation: all the rooms on our floor were being inspected This Very Minute and would be “released” when they passed inspection. We were immediately concerned about fumes, as I have asthma. We asked whether the room had been painted today or carpeting had been glued today, and she said yes to the paint, not sure about carpets. We asked whether the windows opened; she said no. So we asked to be moved to a room that hadn’t been painted *today*. She replied that the entire hotel had undergone recent renovation and that no one was complaining about fumes but she would see what she could do, although it would take a while. Rather than wait in the lobby, we went to dinner.

Around 8:30pm the hotel phoned to let us know on our room was ready - 4 1/2 hours past the promised checkin time. We got back to the hotel around 11pm and went up to the room. The smell hit us like a wall. It was like standing in a toxic superfund site while wearing a face mask that had been dipped in some sort of solvent. It reeked of both paint and glue, and there were still pieces of blue masking tape hanging here and there on the walls.

We went back to the front desk to change rooms, but no dice. The nighttime desk clerk basically said “What a shame that Miss Snottypants didn’t bother to move you when you asked four hours ago; now it’s too late - the hotel is completely full.” Using the internet, we tried to find a different hotel till 1:45am, but due to the holiday the city was at capacity. We ended up having to sleep in that chemical soup.

We checked out first thing in the morning, and found an inexpensive hotel 25 minutes north town for the following night. While the hotel refunded our night’s stay, it felt like small consolation for the fact that our three day weekend San Antonio's riverwalk was ruined and we were forced to breathe poison all night or sleep in our car.

Other notes: the electrical outlets in the bedroom did not work. The bed was comfortable and the sheets were of good quality. This hotel might have been an Embassy Suites in a past life as its layout was two rooms connected by a bar and bathroom. The sitting room was very dark, concrete-y, and claustrophobic; the bedroom had a window and ambience was fine. Bathroom was fine too, except shower curtain was not actually attached to the pole. Still, I’d never return here. The very late checkin with no apology, the attitude of the front desk staff, and management’s disregard for the health of their customers all came together in an extremely unpleasant Hotel Hell Experience.

Green Features: The fact that the hotel expected us to sleep in a room filled with paint fumes and off-gassing carpet glue says more about their environmentally-friendly practices that whether they're recycling glass and cardboard.

Dear drustrange,
First and foremost, we are sincerely apologetic that your stay with us was obviously disappointing to you and that we failed to meet both our standards as well as your expectations. We have discussed the breakdowns leading to the delay that you experienced checking into the hotel and we are diligently working to see that this type of thing does not happen again. Yes, while we are, in fact, in the midst of a hotel renovation; many of our guests both those new to us as well as those returning to us are quite excited about the fabulous improvements that are being made and they have openly shared their enthusiasm and support with our team. Respectfully though, we do take issue with the assertions that you have made about our lack of ethics and our lack of concern for guest safety and comfort. Guest satisfaction, guest safety and guest comfort are several of our highest priorities and as evidenced by the consistently favorable reviews posted on TripAdvisor; we have a well earned and well established track record for providing our guests with genuinely friendly service in a safe and welcoming environment. We hope that you may return again sometime in the future and experience The Hotel Contessa that keeps many of our guests returning again and again. Please feel free to contact me directly should you ever wish to make a return visit and I will be very pleased to personally assist you with your arrangements.

My wife I stayed here for our anniversary. One of the most memorable. The staff was beyond excellent. Every one of the staff from the hotel, bar & restaurant all wishing us happy anniversary every time they served us. Great, great experience. They made me look like a superstar to my wife.

The staff at The hotel were excellent. No needs were not taken care of. Eddie at the front door was as attentive and helpful as anyone I had ever experienced at a hotel regardless the star rating.

George in the restaurant was as accommodating as well. he was ever present, even though I usually had the excellent buffet (he kept bringing warm banana nut bread with real butter supplied by the chefs, awesome). The construction and elevator problems were somewhat of an inconvenience,But not enough to detract from all the high points. Thanks for a great stay! Kudos to all the staff, sorry I don't remember all the names! Tony and Carolee

Room Tip: We had Riverwalk side, A balcony would have been great!

My new husband and I stayed at the Hotel Contessa on the last day of our honeymoon road trip. After spending days driving and touring and several hotels, Hotel Contessa was a beautiful change of pace. It was perfectly located and yet almost secretly beautiful. The front desk girl was the friendliest person we met on our entire trip! She was so sweet and made sure to congratulate us on the recent wedding.
The food at the restaurant was AMAZING but the portions are HUGE - do not order more than 1 entrée per person!
Finally the amazing staff sent up chocolate covered strawberries and a sweet note congratulating us. Again, the staff went out of their way over and over to make us feel important and it truly made our experience the best night of the honeymoon!

Room Tip: They are undergoing renovations, but the room we had hadn't been redone and was awesome - can...

Overall nice hotel with nice staff and amenities. The one thing that I did not like was the parking options. Pretty much valet parking is the only option available. Our bedroom faced the street where there is always some kind of car activity at night waking us up. Very nice bar and restaurant with access to the Riverwalk.

Centrally located, and easy to get to a lot of the downtown sites.
