Description: O . The river, first named St. Anthony de Padua, was soon diverted into channels and acequias for irrigation of fields and household use. The first bridge built to span the river was here at Commerce Street. As the mission period gave way to a more established society, the river was used for numerous bath houses natatoriums, breweries, and mills. San Antonio began a romance with the river with festivals, fairs, parties and picnics on the banks. The restaurant founded in 1946 by Alfred F. Beyer, sits on land first granted title in 1777 by the King of Spain. The Spanish Colonial period hacienda became the core of the new business. The cedar door and window lintels, the fireplace, and thick rock walls are still evident inside the building. Casa Rio was the first San Antonio business to open its doors to the River and take advantage of the River's setting. Canoes, gondolas, and paddle boats, evolving into tour and dinner boats, began here and helped create the Riverwalk of today.

We ate outside on the River Walk and it was a great experience. We enjoyed eating beside the river. The staff was very friendly. Our waiter, Moe was excellent. The food and margaritas were fabulous and I highly recommend the Botanas Platter- rio pollo poppers are to die for!

We ate on the river outside and had fajitas and my wife had enchiladas. Both were sort of ordinary, maybe because this is Tex-Mex?, but good enough. Toomuch meat for the peppers and onions but good tortillas. Here location tops quality, it is a huge place and has pretty good service.

Thanks so much for your review! your server should have brought you more peppers and onions on request. We are definitely tex-mex! We have been serving San Antonio style mexican food since 1946 and our chili con carne recipe dates back to the 1800s. Thanks for coming!

Anytime we are in San Antonio, we plan at least one meal at this fabulous restaurant! Always very friendly staff, the food is simply delicious, and such a fun atmoshphere with the Mariachi Band walking around, serenading tables by request.

Of course they are a river walk staple and the tourist attraction that makes you want to stop and eat at this restaurant...the margaritas are nice not real strong and the food is typical tex-mex. But all in all it wasn't that bad.

This was a very nice Tex-Mex restaurant along the San Antonio River Walk. It is a located in a slightly quieter area on the RW and provdes an opportunity to talk and still enjoy the river. The food and drinks were good and reasonably priced. If they are available, there are musicians that will serenade you (for a small fee). They are not high pressure, just accessible if you are interested. Take a table along the river and you can watch the ducks that love to beg for chips. This is an enjoyable low key restaurant.
