This is a neat, off the beat lunch spot. The Artisans Salad alone is worth the trip. Time spent at the Southwest School of Art is truly rejuvenating. Don't waste life going to chains, this is a true one of a kind original. Good food, reasonable price and something different for lunch.

The Copper Kitchen is the school kitchen for the Southwest School of Art, and it is open to the public. Here's the wonderful secret. It shares food with the very upscale Club Giraud, a private club also located on the campus of the Southwest School of Art. Get this - the daily specials at the Copper Kitchen are the same cuisine served in the private club next door. Pretty good for a school kitchen, right?
The Copper Kitchen is located by the Riverwalk at the beginning of the Museum Reach. It's just up river from Hotel Havana.
Interesting atmosphere - the Copper Kitchen is positioned in the center building of the 19th Century Ursuline Girls Academy. The tables and chairs are original to the school. Even so, on a pretty day I recommend taking a lunch "to go" and then walking outside to the Riverwalk garden of the school to sit on a bench and dine. It's utterly charming. (Many couples from San Antonio marry in this garden.)
Here's the down side of the Copper Kitchen. It may run out of the two lunch specials. And, the line will move very slow. School cafeteria, you know....

A sweet little place in the SW School of Art. Lunch is sizable and very nice. Atmosphere is adorable... Renovated dorm from the girls academy there in the 1860's. Reasonably priced. Very accessible from the Riverwalk about 1 mile north of the tourist area

My one criticism is that you must come early or the daily specials will be gone! This is a beautiful, historic area and the food is delicious. If you are only downtown for one afternoon, this would be my pick for lunch. Each day they have two hot lunch specials--one is typically mexican food and the other a chicken dish. The sandwiches are good choices too. My favorites are the chicken salad and BLT.

The Copper Kitchen Cafe is located in the Southwest School of Arts and Crafts. The cafe is actually located in the cafeteria of the old Ursuline Academy, a Catholic school for girls from 1851 until 1965. There is a cafeteria line where your food is ordered. Then take your food to the cafeteria tables which seat from 4 to 8 people. The food was very tasty. For a very reasonable price, we had a sandwich and a salad. Take time to tour the grounds also.

There is an entrance to the school from the River Walk. If you are parking in the area, street parking is available at meters for only 25 cents per hour.
