The Cafe is located just north of downtown. The waitstaff is very friendly even at the lunch rush hour. I ordered the SAPD chicken fried steak. I never had queso on a steak and must admit it was good. But the real crowd pleaser is the 3lbs Cinnamon roll!!

This place offers a Texas twist on coffee shop fare in a slightly remodeled 50's coffee shop by an old motel.

The cinnamon "nugget" is a super-sized white flour cinnamon bun that probably has over 1000 calories and little to no nutritional value, and they pop it in the microwave before serving it to you. Mine came with some of the cellophane wrapping still attached to the icing and it was fuzed to the styrofoam tray that it was served on. It slowly became harder as it cooled until it was manageable only with a knife. I ate very little of it and would not recommend it unless you are a person who needs to carbo-load on processed bleached flour.

Try that with the chicken fried breakfast and you will exceed the USDA calorie requirements for a week. The fried egg was cooked at a high temperature so the the edges were brown and crispy, almost uncuttable and the yolk was runny. My table companion did not even eat all of his bacon, too chewy.

The service was very slow and inattentive.

If you want to take a trip down memory lane and be reminded of the days when there was only one coffee shop in any given small Texas south town, then this is the place. The "cook" is not skinny, by edict from the owner, as can be seen from the sign "never trust a skinny cook".

The quality of cuisine was on par with a prison or soup kitchen, and I guess can be considered "home cooking" if no one at home ever took a cooking class. Even though it is open 24 hours in a town with few options in the middle of the night, I would not consider dropping in for a late night munch.

On the other hand, if you like that kind of food, you probably aren't concerned about a review from an untrustworthy healthy skinny person.

Looking for something different, the desk clerk at our hotel suggested the Jailhouse .Not easy to find for the out of towner, you dont expect such a good restaurant to be under a bridge. Inside is diner fun, chicken fried steak traditional with fantastic smashed potatos or mine with queso was so tender & it was almost larger than my plate. Hard to imagine thinking of more food but we purchased the famous cinnamon roll, shared it between 3 adults with coffee the next morning..we loved it & yes it was alittle slow.. but Id rather have a piece of meat that large cooked through than to be disappointed once it was served...I would love to visit again.
