Neighborhood: North Central
Description: Founded in 1978, we have been fire-roasting our famous salsa and mixing our legendary margaritas for 35 years, serving an average of 450 guests daily—that’s right, 6,000 (or more) happy diners enjoy the restaurant each week. That’s an amazing feat for a San Antonio Mexican restaurant that started as little more than a taco stand in a former neighborhood Dairy Queen. Our staff is dedicated to your fun! The La Fogata team includes staff members who have been on the serving line since 1978. The same cook has been creating the restaurant’s award-winning salsa for 24 years. In an industry known for its high turnover, even the wait staff includes long-time La Fogata veterans, so Dwight is surrounded by a dedicated team who knows the business and shares his passion for the restaurant.

We planned a trip to San Antonio specifically to experience its highly lauded Mexican food, and came away with La Fogata as our hands down favorite. Don't see much of a downfall - the atmosphere, the food, THE MARGARITAS - just the entire experience. This place alone might bring us back to SA. Also tried Los Barrios (sub-par food and rude service), Rosarios (great margaritas and adequate food, but horrific parking and apathetic service), and Picante Grill (waste of time). But La Fogata definitely made the trip worthwhile.

“Will not return”
Reviewed July 18, 2009

When calling to make reservations, they told us there would be just a short wait and we didn't need reservations. We waited 1 hour just to get seated and then another hour to get our food. The food was just O.K. The atmosphere was nice, but I've seen much nicer. The margaritas were good, but extremely pricey. All of the highchairs in the place were broken. There was a manager walking around the whole night (since we were there for 3 hours), but he never asked how we were doing. He just seemed to want to talk to the hostesses. We were expecting something wonderful, but were very disappointed. It's also in a very bad neighborhood, so we highly recommend valet parking. We will definately never return.

“best chicken flautas in San Antonio”
Reviewed July 4, 2009

I live in San Antonio. I love chicken flautas. I have had them everywhere and can tell you hands down that La Fogata has the best ones. They use white meat and layer the flautas with a thick layer of guac. So good. The margs are good if you like them sweet (not me). My husband always orders "Un Poquito de Todo" which is a smapler plate with all their best.

“Great mexican food and margaritas in a pretty patio setting...”
Reviewed March 22, 2009

We went on a recent Saturday night, and waited about 45 minutes for our table. Thankfully the $8 margaritas were very tasty, and the people watching was fun, so our wait didn't seem so long. We had a nice table on the patio, so we enjoyed the nice weather while we dined. Service was fine--the waiter was very nice but did have a number of tables to juggle. Our food came out fairly fast, and it was fantastic! Watch out for the salsa--it was too hot for my wife (but I ate plenty of it). Our dishes were great--green chile enchiladas (wife) and chicken mole enchiladas. They both ran about $12. We both cleaned our plates and had no room for dessert! We will be back!!
