Description: Whether dining in the cozy interior or on the outdoor villa-style terrace overlooking the San Antonio River, exquisite food and impeccable service are mainstays of the Fig Tree Restaurant. Crisp linens drape tables set with fine china and sparkling crystal in elegant yet homey surroundings.Delicate, highly composed dishes such as Tournedos Rossini with Perigourdine Sauce, Seared Nori Tempura Yellow Fin Tuna and Cold Water Australian Lobster with Drawn Butter are menu stand-outs. Tableside flamed desserts include Bananas Foster over Vanilla Ice Cream and traditional Baked Alaska.Historically referred to as the Gray-Guilbeau House, the building is named for James Gray and French consul Francois Guilbeau who bought the house from Gray in 1853. The house saw many owners, including the Henshaw family, and was the last of the private dwellings in La Villita. The Phelps family purchased the home in December of 1970 as their personal residence. Visitors to the home were enthralled with its historical significance and ambiance. Prompted by this the family voted to share the house with all, and the Fig Tree Restaurant was born.Mr. and Mrs. Frank Phelps opened the Fig Tree Restaurant on March 17, 1971, and the family has continuously operated the restaurant ever since. We sincerely hope you enjoy this old home and its surroundings as much as those who have lived and dined here in the past.Around the corner from the Hilton Hotel, next to Little Rhein Steak House

We just celebrated my husband's birthday at The Fig tree last night. The restaurant is beautiful and the outdoor area, where we sat, is delightful on a cool evening. We had a wonderful waiter who started our evening with some bite size appetizer samples which were on the house. They have fresh, made in house rolls, with the best butter I have ever tasted! We had the Beef Wellington and a couple of our friends enjoyed their nightly special. The Wellington is Fig Tree Style so it's a little different than the traditional but, it is still worth it. Overall everyone enjoyed their dinner. The cocktails were fun and those who indulged enjoyed their pear-tinis and such. For dessert my husband had the Baked Alaska which they actually lit up at our table. Normally because of wind they said they usually just do that indoors. I'm guessing because there wasn't a breeze and it was his birthday they did it to make it special. After dinner they sent a small truffle for each of us to our table to enjoy. The food can be pricey depending on what you order. The only drawback to the restaurant is the building type. It's in La Villita so it's historical and beautiful but, it has many layers like a home you would see in a movie about Greece. Walking out to the patio area involves stairs that lead to the varied levels. If you have a hard time walking this probably isn't the place for you. Ladies wearing heels should be careful as well. It does offer a walk up from the actuall Riverwalk which is probably easier to walk up then to walk down from the entrance in La Villita. Also, the bathroom is two floors up from the main floor. So from the patio area it's about three flights up. Because it's a historical building I don't believe it's wheel chair accesible. This didn't affect any of our group but, it might affect someone else's. Overall it's a wonderful place that is not to be missed. It's very romantic and charming!

We ate here this past weekend, and had one of the best meals ever. Truly enjoyed every bite. Outside table (at our request) was a bit windy, but we wanted view of river. Waitress a bit frazzled, but we didn't mind. Will be back next time in SA.

Nice place with a view on the river walk, l ordered beef wellington, the steak was wonderful, but a piece of puff pastry on either side does not constitute or make a beef Wellington, the drinks and other food all good

My husband, another couple, and I were trying to find a romantic dining experience overlooking the River Walk that was away from the bustling crowds that would please our cultural palates, as well as, have an extensive wine list..........well, we found it ( we were also debating Zocca, but a local told us to go to Fig Tree). We took the locals advice and were not disappointed. This place was perfectly situated and neatly tucked in a small curve of the river two doors down from the Hilton Palace Hotel. The outdoor teired terrace was breathtaking, it is predominately made of flagstone stair stepping down with a beautifully lit gazebo and pretty green ivey running along the stone. A Fig Tree overhung part of the terrace. The Restaurant was situated near a outdoor performance theatre and you could hear the lovely spanish music guitars in the back ground. We ordered two appetizers ( both were recommended by the waitress) the shrimp stuffed avocado $12 and The crab cake$14...both were outstanding....one of the best crab cakes I've had (it had more jumbo crab meat and alot less of the "fillers"). We each ordered different main courses that averaged around $40 a plate......We had : Lobster with black truffle butter, black rice, and green beans $46, Trout Almondine with red potatoes, and green beans $28; Beef Wellington with mashed potatoes $42?, and Stewed Veal Cheek with veggies$34?.......We each thoroughly enjoyed every dish......Infact, we usually try and decide which dish is the Best everytime we go out to eat and this time all 4 dishes were soooo good we had a tie. I would ,also , like to recommend ordering a bottle of Bell Glos Pinot $60.....it complimented all the dishes and will never disappoint. The only negative we had was our waitress appeared to be new and didn't know the menu well or how to flambe the baked alaska we ordered for dessert which resulted in burnt cream ontop....we just scraped the burned cream off and the rest was ok. Before I finish posting this...I want to add this...... we arrived at the restaurant at 9:40pm and our friends arrived around 10pm....this was late because the kitchen closes at 10:15pm , but we never felt rushed through our meal.
