We went for the Sunday brunch and thought is was very nice. We arrived at 1:45 p.m. and were surprised to find the place only half full. Turns out that they open at 10 a.m. and most people arrive very early for breakfast.
Anyway, there were lots of different foods from breakfast to lunch dishes. Everything we tried was good to excellent, including the large selection of deserts. Champagne is served all thru the brunch and it was a very good Spanish brut. The service was very good - attentive without being overbearing. We enjoyed the setting and were happy to be inside not far from the serving tables!

We used to visit this restaurant often 20 years ago for their great Sunday brunch.
We moved out to Boerne and stopped visiting downtown SA and the Riverwalk.
We just moved back and are reacquainting ourselves
with some of our old favorites.
December in San Antonio is a magic season. The trees along the Riverwalk are festooned with colorful blinking lights,
carolers perform old favorites from gaily lit barges as they pass by our perch on the river.
The folks who work at this Omni property make it very special. From the car valets to the dining hostess to the food and beverage director, everybody at Las Canarias is very friendly.
We ordered the Prix Fix meal which includes wine,
an appetizer, an entree and a desert.
The Butternut Cider Bisque with Chestnuts was delicious. The herb roasted chicken with Yukon mashed potatoes, and broccolini was amazing.
The presentations were done well and the added touches of a Santa made up of strawberry, goat cheese, and balsamic with a sprig of cilantro was impressive.
Our Tres Leches cheese cake was unlike any other we've ever had. It was so rich, but very light and tasty.
We were allowed to choose our wines. They served
us a Pinot Noir from Oregon and a Merlot from California. They were a little stingy on the amount of wine served until an intervention by our amazing hostess Gigi. We also had a nice visit with the food and beverage manager Saeed. He is a lively fellow with a real understanding of history.
The valet parking for Las Canarias is covered and no charge to diners. Just have your parking ticket stamped at the hostess station.

We had a wonderful dining experience for lunch. The food was prepared perfectly, the service was excellent and well-trained and the ambience was perfect...sophisticated, calm, totally lovely. We so much regret going to a noisy Riverwalk restaurant for dinner rather than enjoying dinner at this lovely restaurant. So glad that we had a perfect lunch. This will be at the top of our list for our next visit!

I had always heard that Las Canarias offered the epitome of restaurant brunches in San Antonio. Though the price p.p. is expensive, we decided to treat ourselves for Thanksgiving brunch. The restaurant is actually virtual in that it occupies various nooks, courtyards and riverside seating across the beautiful old hotel. And the brunch is set amongst the various areas in a central courtyard.

The maitre'd led us through a maze of lines and crowded areas down to the river and to the farthest reach of tables that were unoccupied. We were seated under a bridge. The location on the river was nice as long as one did not look up. The under-structure of the bridge is covered with a furry brown fungus like coating looking as if a big chunk could break off and fall on you or your food at any minute. Not very appetizing. We asked to be relocated but were told that seating was at a premium. I told the maitre'd 'fine, but keep the champagne coming" so as to dull the senses a bit and to forget about the disgusting overhead view.

It was a bit of walk back to the brunch area. And even though the food offerings were copious and some very well prepared, most items were cold by the time we were able to return to our distant table. In addition, several of the items that had been touted on the menu were not to be found. And when the servers were questioned about the absence of the dish, they feigned ignorance or said that a substitution had been made. Some of the items that we came specifically to try were not available; a bit of the old "bait and switch" as far as I am concerned.
.
We left after we had had all the cold food, trooping miles to the food service area, and brown fungus viewing we could handle. Later that day we called the restaurant, spoke with the manager and related our experience to him. His nonchalance to our complaint spoke volumes about La Mansion's customer relations. No offer was made for any kind of customer dissatisfaction appeasement. After an actual request for some sort of compensation, the manager begrudgingly made an insulting gesture of a 15% discount next time we visited.

"Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright;
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout;
But there is no joy in Mudville -- the mighty La Mansion brunch has struck out."

I think this place for me shall remain El Fongo Marron undeserving of any further visits.

If the weather allows, eat on the riverwalk. Food (Thankgiving Buffet) was excellent, service attentive without being obtrusive. Staff efficient but friendly.
