Nao is a beautiful restaurant located in the Pearl Brewery complex. It offers foods that are unique to South Central Texas. We went for lunch and had an outstanding meal--wonderful ceviche, and flatbreads covered with all sorts of delicious toppings. It was a real treat! I think they're only open for lunch on Friday and Saturday--and dinner Monday through Saturday. You probably would need a reservation for dinner. A 17% gratuity is included in your tab. The only downside was that there was only one server that day, so service was fairly slow. Even so, we will return the next time we're in San Antonio.

The chefs-in-training do a superb job. The menu is so varied (and it changes frequently) that I do not even try to review the individual dishes. They have a South American flair. We went there on a Friday evening. The two of us tried 4 different items, all were excellent. We were so satisfied that we returned the next night and then also for a Sunday lunch. All the 12 different dishes we tried were way above average. The service was friendly, attentive and not overbearing. The cocktail menu has some unusual concoctions and their Pisco Sour was the best we had so far in the USA. You can sit at the chef's table and watch the action.

Went to lunch at NAO today on recommendation of collegue. This is a training restaurant- upscale, for the Culinary Institute. The menu states they charge a 17% tip to help out their students, and the menu is filled with South American foods/ drinks that were not familiar to me. The waitress invited me to ask questions which I did, but she did not have any answers. She did not know about the liquors used in their specialty drinks, she did not know how many ounces their hamburger was, and she forgot to put in half of our order. When the food came, it was beautifully presented and very tasty, but the portions were like tapas, small appetizers, costing $9-$14 each. Leaving the restaurant, we had to go get something to eat- disappointing.

If you like tapas NAO is a winner. They separate themselves from the rest of the tapas restaurants around town with beautiful plate presentations, more daring use of ingredients, and a very good non traditional wine selection at pretty modest prices. I couldn't tell if the chefs and waiters were students or teachers, but the food and experience rivals that of the best restaurants in San Antonio. The service and atmosphere was very good, but not as good as some of my favorite places that make you feel like they're raising the bar just for you.
