Review of Alamo Plaza

Alamo Plaza
Ranked #26 of 280 things to do in San Antonio
Certificate of Excellence

Go, just go...timing is key: get up early and head out, or on a traditional school day...if not, the lines are significant, but it is still worth it. This is big, from me, as I don't stand in line for anything, ever. The tour is amazing, the grounds are intriguing (ask about their official cat) and the gift shop is possibly the best and biggest in Texas!! I always leave with a lump in my throat and several bags to lug to the car. Speaking of: park right, they will tow.

Enjoyed a stroll through the historical exhibits which illustrated how the people from varied backgrounds came to be in the area during the time of the mission. Learning details about who was living at the Alamo and how it came to be defended was a lesson I had long forgotten.
the mission defense was thrust upon a 26 year who stepped up to replace the actual leader who was taken ill prior to attack. A messenger who was sent for reinforcements chose to return to the Alamo, knowing that reinforcements would not be coming to the outnumbered members defending the Alamo.
Work has been done to reconstruct structures to replicate setting, but original mission building is intact. Free movie from History channel is shown to give history of Alamo.
Admission is free and donations are accepted. I mean really what can you do for free these days...

I am never disappointed with a visit to the Alamo, there is always something new to learn there. All of the Missions are interesting in their own unique way.

Included the Alamo as well as the yard and gift shop. There is a small museum of the garrison. However, It would be better if you can visit at a time when it wont be crowded because the Alamo is a significant piece of Texas history

I am still a bit baffled by the hype around the Alamo, given that it is a complete farce historically (look for the map where the original mission stood and where the Alamo complex now stands). Actually most of the Alamo Mission was where the plaza is now, but you wouldn't notice. The Alamo in the end is a monument to an idea of History, and not History. Look at old pictures of this area and you see how much people actually cared about the heritage and the mission itself.
