Nice place, very open and historical. Very nice places around to visit for dining and drinking - a great alternative to the River Walk.

The Main Plaza stands right in front of the San Fernando Cathedral (see my separate review). It is a very historic site (albeit not well marked) as it was established in 1731 by the original settlers of San Antionio from the Canary Isalnds. Their homes circled this spot, and this plaza has been the site of many historic battles and peace treaties. It was the site of key battles with the Indians and with Santa Anna's Mexican troops.

The park itself was recently rennovated, but it is mostly cement and not a grass park. There are supposedly some beautiful ground level fountains, but none of them were working when we visited. It is surrounded by striking buildings including the site of the County Courthouse with a beehive style top.

The plaza is intended to be the site of various gatherings, music, artists, farmers market, entertainments, etc., but there was no activity the week I was there. It looked a little bit abandoned. San Antonio needs to developed this area similar to River Walk.

On the negatives:

1. Not enough shade or grass to enjoy the park.
2. Fountains never seem to be working on the two days I visited this park.
3. Some homeless people (only ones I saw in San Antonio), but they were not aggressive or scary like in some big cities

The city of San Antonio needs to do more to commemorate the history of this place and to enourage and promote more use. This could be a great place to escape the crowds of the River Walk if properly developed.
