Owner description: San Pedro Springs Park is the second oldest in the nation and oldest in San Antonio. Since there is a natural water source in the park, it is said to be the reason why settlers were drawn to the area. It also includes the San Pedro Playhouse, a library, and tennis courts.

This lovely park just happened to be within a short walk of where we stayed in San Antonio. So happy our hosts told us about the spring fed swimming pool- it was exactly the retreat we needed from the Texas heat. So nice to go for a dip in the afternoon to cool off! The swimming pool was large, so never felt crowded even though it did seem popular.

The springs at San Pedro Park were first used far earlier than the arrival of the first European settlers in North America. Today, the springs feed a large pool, and the park's giant, twisted oaks provide needed shade on a sunny afternoon. It's a popular place for locals to set up a birthday party or family barbecue. Walk to the adjacent softball fields, tennis complex or catch a play at The Playhouse.

Nice to have a park this size just north of downtown with the historical springs and the pool being renovated to look more natural than the previous pool. Lots of place for play and large shade trees.

Easy to envision Comanches camped around the springs. Pool surrounded by ancient cypress trees. Wonderful peaceful for walking and kids play. Charming public library branch on San Pedro Avenue side of park.

When we travel "roughing it" in the RV we find public swimming pools to relax, cool down, and clean up at. After a hot day roaming the Alamo, Riverwalk, and other sites we came to this oasis in the desert expecting a normal outdoor pool and found Nirvana!

The cost is nominal, the facilities old fashioned but functional, and the ambiance was so-o-o-o relaxing. The pool is very long from end to end, about 200 yards, it's as wide as many pools are long, and the water temperature was cool but not cold. It's surrounded by majestic towering ancient trees with lots of shade on the wide soft grass. The depth starts at just a few feet at the sides and slowly deepens to about 4 to 5 feet in the center. It's clean, well kept and has LOTS of room for everyone. It was a joy to watch not just our grand kids, but others as well enjoy the old fashioned summer pleasure of swimming in the "river" even though it's cement lined with no mud to be found, darn it. {:-(.

I got curious about what was on the other side of bridge at the leading end of the pool so I took a little stroll. Sure enough there was a river (dry bed) leading up to the bridge that covered where the water was pouring into the pool. Ver-r-r-y Inter-r-esting!
