Hampton Inn San Antonio Downtown (River Walk)
Ranked #80 of 357 Hotels in San Antonio
Reviewed December 26, 2006

Had to stay in San Antonio for a conference in October and picked the Hampton Inn because of its location and because the other conference hotels were already booked. If you are carrying a briefcase and laptop to the convention center this can be quite a walk on a hot day. This place is convenient to the Riverwalk - not directly on it. And if you are walking from the Riverwalk at night alone it can feel a little isolated.

That said, for the price, it wasn't a bad hotel. The noise levels, as mentioned in other reviews, can be annoying and the breakfast was so-so. But the room was clean and comfortable, the staff was friendly and helpful and the free internet access was excellent for business travel.

Not a deluxe property but cost-effective and clean.

My wife and I were in San Antonio for a conference and were unable to reserve a room in one of the three conference hotels (Marriot Riverwalk, Rivercenter, and Hilton). As a result, we selected the Hampton Inn for its location, price, and the website pictures. I was a little skeptical since our only other stay at a Hamptons (in Miami - Coconut Grove) was a mediocre experience at best. To our relief, this hotel was considerably better and, overall, fine. It is clean, conveniently located to the Riverwalk and Alamo, and the rooms were pleasant. Free hot beverages 24 hours a day was nice. The free breakfast was satisfactory. The room walls were a bit thin and we could hear the people in the next room coming in at night. While we couldn't actually make out their exact conversations it was a bit annoying. Also, there is no restaurant or room service.

I had previously stayed at the Marriot Rivercenter about ten years ago. This is not as nice but considering the difference in price we would definitely stay at this Hamptons again.

Room was OK, bathroom was way below Hampton standards. Leaky faucets, prison-style toilet, no towel racks (at all! They put towels under the sink), no closet (just small armoire). OK breakfast, good location for tourists, fair for business.

Great hotel!!! It's located two very short blocks behind the Alamo and Rivercenter Mall. Access to the highway is fairly easy. My wife and I were pleased to see that the hotel had been recently remodeled. New beds, furniture and fixtures in all the rooms. Bathrooms were spacious with new, brushed fixtures. The rooms are very clean and nicely decorated. This is the only hotel where I've stayed that offers change of comforter daily, when requested. On our second night's stay, one of the lamps in the bedroom became inoperable. I informed Brian, who was working at the front desk, of the problem. Upon our return to the room, a couple of hours later, we were pleased to find that the problem had been fixed. Brian and the rest of the staff are awesome!!! This is the only hotel that my wife and I will stay from now on when visiting San Antonio.

As other reviews have pointed out, the location for this HI is near the Alamo, but it is a tricky walk across a couple of streets. Night in any large North American city is not without some trepidation, and, yes, even during the day, pan handlers are present. Awareness of one's surroundings is always a good idea. The HI was adequate, our room was small, no refrigerator and a very loud airconditioning unit . It does have an adequate breakfast, free parking , pool, single computer in the lobby and drinks (juices, coffee, etc.)are available all the time in the lobby. Bed was comfortable. Except for one individual, the staff was very helpful and friendly. We've stayed in better HIs, and worse, so I'd say this was in the middle.

Stayed as part of a church choir group. 16 rooms. Had a great time. The laundry was a plus. we had been on the road for 7 days and it was nice to have clean clothes again. The common area in the lobby is nice and big. The rooms were great. A/C really cold.(nice). Bathrooms bigs and roomy. Beds, WOW. Best sleep in 6 days ( First night of trip was at a Hampton also). The b'fast was good. Enough to get you thru til lunch. The juice and coffee all day is a plus. The only complaint I could have is the TV in the lobby allows HBO to show, which wouldn't normally be a problem. But at 10;15 on Fri night, a couple of the boys in my group was watching and flipping the channels and went by HBO which had Real Sex on. Needless to say it was a view that didnt need to be seen. The management may want to block the HBO channel on the lobby TV.
I was in San Antonio in December and stayed on the river walk. Had a good stay there, but now I wish I would have stayed here. My next trip here, I will stay at this Hampton.
