“Mayan Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 31, 2012

It was a very, very long day of travel on December 20,2012 and I was traveling in from Canada and joining my husband in Houston to drive to our "Favorite" Hotel in the U.S. which is "El Tropicano". We staggled in at 4;00 in the morning and was greetd by a cold front outside but a warm smile inside. It sure was a sight for sore eyes after a long and arduous trip we were ever so delighted to arrive!!. We had our room ready for us and after we unpacked we were ready to greet the Mayan Experience the next Day. Well, we did experience it in the form of utmost professionalism, attentiveness, care and courteous customer service at "El Tropicano". So I hope this review will provide some insight to your travel's

Room Tip: if you want to sleep in ask for room's in the inner side of the hotel because the sun won't...

They did a really great job remodeling this hotel...lots of light, very contemporary updated decor. Rooms are nice (a bit small), and the bed is comfortable. VERY clean!!!! (They are not afraid to sanitize the bathrooms!!!) Food is good. Service is excellent. Staff super nice! It is in the museum/art district area of San Antonio, so the walk along the riverwalk to shops and restaurants is a little longer, but its a pleasurable walk...the riverwalk is beautiful on this end. This truly was a great surprise to us, and I will definitely return. Excellent value for the money.

Room Tip: dont stay in the rooms next to the elevator! Also, you can hear some of the noise in the hallways i...

Keep in mind that if you want to pay $200-300 per night, there are plenty of hotels on the riverwalk that will take your money. We were very pleased with our stay for the price. Hotel staff were very friendly and made it a point to say hello or good morning. Parking for $18 is a steal compared to the other hotels. Yes, this hotel is 50 years old but they've made some wonderful improvements. The lobby is spacious and there are plenty of veranda areas to sit and read the paper. The bed was comfortable and the morning breakfast buffet is delicious. We did not mind the 15 minute walk on the riverwalk to get to the restaurants since the landscaping is beautiful. Yes the bathrooms are small, but as I said, if you want the best, you have to pay for it. We plan on coming back!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a riverwalk view.

First I must admit I am very picky. So with that disclaimer let me say this. They TRY. Everything about it is OLD, EVERYTHING! They have tried to do some upgrades in the rooms. It is a place to sleep and I only came due to blind draw on Hotwire. If I could I would get my money back and spend a little more to be more in the involvement of riverwalk and more modern and updated features. The TV is from the 80's and half the channels are fuzzy or the sound buzzes at you. Not much room in bathroom and forget sitting on toilet without bruising your arm/elbow on the wall. It really is about a 2 - 2.5 star

The el tropicano always makes my stay wonderful. You immediately get great service as soon as you step foot in the lobby. The front office staff is great and always takes care of your every need. The rooms are comfortable and the beds are the best. Parking is only $18 which is the cheapest in all downtown san antonio. The Marriott charges $27 per night and thats at a separate lot!!!!! I stay at this hotel for the price and the fact that its on the river is just a plus. It is just a short walk from the main part of downtown and the local mom and pop restaurants are awesome. Pete's taco house and guillermos(:. This hotel isn't in the heart of downtown which is why the rates are great. Most bad comments are people who don't do research but if you want a hotel in the heart of the riverwalk feel free to pay 200 a night. If you want cheap rates great service and don't mind getting up and walking a little bit stay here. This is why I'm always returning.

This hotel is on the riverwalk but about half a mile from the tourist area. Nice gym. Pool is average. For anyone on business, the wifi is useless. Very slow when connected. Most of the time it won't connect at all.

I've stayed here twice and loved the place. Friendly staff, good food and nice room and pool area. It is beautiful inside and has a coffee stand with sandwiches and pastries. Also a full bar. Outside tables over look the river. The location is great for the Riverwalk and the Alamo. Will be back!!!
