Description: One of the Top 25 Bars in America, The Esquire Tavern opened in 1933 to celebrate the end of Prohibition - a beloved San Antonio watering hole ever since. When it comes to choosing the best Riverwalk bars to spend your time, atmosphere certainly matters. Our legendary establishment is the quintessential downtown bar: dark, cool, redolent with history, and serving cold beer, swanky cocktails, and excellent food. Don't believe us? Step right up and sink your teeth into some handmade SA comfort food including Organic Sirloin Burgers, Crispy Chile Salted Fries, Big Red Empanadas, and Fried Apple Pie with Bourbon Carmel Sauce made from scratch! Now that you trust us a bit more....feel free to stay a while and enjoy hand crafted cocktails using the best of spirits and freshest of juices from the Margarita to the Moscow Mule. Beer lovers, indulge with over 10 Texas/regional brews on tap and enjoy the ice cold bottled beers you love.

Esquire Tavern is the oldest restaurant on the Riverwalk, and is not at all what you would expect. You may expect the atmosphere, dimly lit with oil lamps on every table, but not the food. The food is surprisingly fresh, modern, and organic, not your average pub or tavern menu. For instance, you won't find normal ketchup or mustard in Esquire Tavern, you'll find their homemade recipes. They tout the claim that everything is made from scratch, and I believe it.

I'm giving this a 4 star instead of 5 because of their rigid service. The staff was really not friendly or unfriendly, just there doing their job. One thing is for sure, you won't find another restaurant like this on the Riverwalk. Enjoy!

This place definitely live up to all of the good reviews. We stopped in for one of their Brown Derby cocktails and decided to order food. We ordered a burger and shared it. Before we were finished we wished we had each got one. It was the best tasting burger my wife or I had ever eaten. We also ordered cole slaw as a side and it was just okay. We later came back another day and sampled a different cocktail. They are very good as well but not inexpensive. It is a little dark inside but very comfortable after a long walk on the river.

Wow--in a sea of mediocre Tex-Mex, this place really delivers on cocktails and fresh, innovative classics. If you are in the industry or a cocktail junkie, they have several different types of Fernet Branca and some house made infused Fernets, as well. I had the Aviacion, a play on the classic Aviation, and it was spectacular. Food=barbeque with house made pickles, pit beans, and homemade slaw. Perfect. Ruined an expensive shirt, but who cares!

They were out of everything we ordered, so we kept having to order again. The whole restaurant smelled like kerosene - due to the kerosene lamps at every table. We luckily got a table outside.
