“Good, but incomplete”
Reviewed December 29, 2013

The archeological portion is fascinating. However, the treatment of various cultures is uneven, I guess because each display depended on contributions from that culture's representatives.

Good observation from the reviewer. The representation of the various cultures that came to Texas was dependent on what researchers could find and what artifacts the museum could acquire or receive on loan. While there are more than 20 cultures displayed on the exhibit floor, many more have come to Texas since the museum's establishment 45 years ago. Certain limitations (research personnel, funding, object loans/acquisition) make mounting new exhibits a challenge. As we begin a new master planning process for the exhibit floor, we hope to address some of these issues. Good feedback, and our thanks to JHelf. - James B., ITC Communications

“A must see if you are a visitor to San Antonio”
Reviewed December 20, 2013

The Institute is a great place to visit and review the Texas history. In the Spring they have a culture celebration celebrating all of the cultures that have settled in and around San Antonio. Do make this a must stop on your visit to San Antonio.

“Very interesting”
Reviewed December 10, 2013 via mobile

I grew up in Texas and found this very interesting. It will definitely take a few hours so be prepared to be there for awhile. Be sure to talk to the docents on staff. They have great information to share.

“Lesser known, but not to be missed”
Reviewed October 27, 2013

We had not planned to visit this initially but found ourselves with time and decided to try it. It has the disadvantage of being a little out of the way at the far end of Hemisfair Park which lessens the foot traffic a bit. However, it is worth the extra effort. It centers around all of the cultures that have settled in Texas and the customs brought from their homeland. There is also an EXCELLENT interactive segment about immigration and what that entails, primarily geared to children but fascinating to adults, as well. As an added benefit, the walk through Hemisfair Park to get there was a happy surprise. There are homes and other buildings from the World's Fair (most of which you cannot go into), which are an architectural hobbyist's dream. It ends just before the Institute and almost right next door to the Alamodome!

The interactive section on immigration this reviewer mentions is the "Why We Came" exhibit, designed like a giant board game. Why We Came is on display until March 2014. The reviewer also offered some details on HemisFair Park - The City of San Antonio is currently undertaking a renovation project that should go into 2016, which is geared at revitalizing HemisFair Park. - James B., ITC Communications
