San Jose is one of four missions making up a National Historic Site that have also been nominated to become a World Heritage Site. Although San Jose has been called "the queen of the missions" because it is a larger, more complete complex, all four missions are different and worth a visit. Mission Concepcion and Mission San Jose have recently been restored and are quite beautiful inside. Mission San Juan is presently undergoing restoration. And Mission San Juan de Capistrano is next in line for restoration. (This latter mission is especially interesting because it is still out in the country and gives a better impression of what it must have been like when there were only a couple for friars, a few soldiers, and the local native American population in there. All the missions also still operate as Catholic Churches with regularly scheduled masses for the public.
