It's a 15 minute drive from the River Walk, and feels like stepping back in time. It's quiet and not overrun, and the National Park Service has an interesting visitor center. I recommend visiting if you love history.

“Visit History”
Reviewed March 23, 2013

This is probably the most elaborate of the missions in San Antonio. The exterior wall has been rebuilt and the grounds give a great idea of what life would have been like back when this mission was first built. It's great that so many visitors can learn about the history of Texas and experience the reverence of these old missions.

“Very cool!”
Reviewed March 21, 2013

I grew up in Texas but seemed to miss out on the mission trail in San Antonio. Mission San Jose and its story are captivating. Take the guided tour. It is free and full of information. Only 10 minutes from downtown. Away from the crowd and well worth the drive

“The largest & most restored of the missions in San Antonio's Missions National Park”
Reviewed March 19, 2013

The largest & most restored of the missions in San Antonio's Missions National Park is the one to visit if you only have time to tour one. The mission and grounds are so beautiful and perfect for pictures as well as meditations, and you can attend daily worship services since it is still an active catholic parish. If you have children, be sure to stop by the ranger station in the visitor center so the kids can get their packets to complete for ranger badges - all free of charge.
