If you do not want to be on the River Walk but would prefer a resort style vacation near by,
La Cantera is a great choice. You are in the hill country and right next door to 2 wonderful golf courses, an amazing theme-thrill ride park Fiesta 6 Flags and 2 BIG shopping Malls, and an attentive and fun Kid's Club. The nature trail and outside spaces were lovely.
My DH said the bed was the most comfortable of any place we have stayed, and he would know!
They have several lovely pools complete with water slide, and very nice scenery. They also have an extensive spa. The dining options include a pleasant bar, café, full service casual restaurant and the lovely Francesca's At Sunset which was likely the finest overall dining experience I have ever experienced in the US.
Seeing them decorate for the Holidays was an added bonus and made me want to stay longer.

Room Tip: Can ask for a nice view, or upper floor but the views seem to be all around as it is on top of a lar...

On holiday in Texas from Scotland, stayed here to play the golf course. Wonderful setting but had to wait 10 minutes to check in. We had driven from Houston so were tired and we could have done without the wait.
But the rooms were good as was the ambiance of the hotel was excellent.
Enjoyed the La Cantera golf course.

I found the staff of the hotel were by and large very good. Especially the bar staff in the main bar (very good range of Scotch whisky which made me feel at home) and the drivers of the shuttle buses. All were pleasant and very helpful.

All in all I think just by tightening up on a few things this could be one of the worlds great hotels.

My family and I had a terrific stay at this resort. Our room was nice, the facility was spacious and clean, and the staff were prompt, courteous, and attentive. I'd highly recommend this location to anyone seeking a quiet, getaway-type vacation away from the hustle and bustle. Don't forget to try the hiking trail!

Kudos to Alejandro at Brannon's Cafe for excellent customer service, and the entire catering team for a delicious thanksgiving meal.

We visited the Westin over the Columbus Day weekend. Our trip was so relaxing. We went with another family who had been before. The kids were so excited to go to the Kid's Club! We did the Parents Night Out one night which included art and craft, smores, feeding the fish, dinner and movie. The kids didn't want to leave when we picked them up. They woke up the next morning at 7am wanting to go back down to the Kid's Club. The Kid's Club leader, Jenica, took very good care of our kids and made their time fun. She has a great personality which made the kids keep wanting to come back!

We also enjoyed the beautiful hotel and amenities!

What a treat staring at the Westin La Cantera in San Antonio. I must say, it may not be on the river walk or in downtown but your not going to miss a beat staying at this location. It's a resort. Enough said. Also, located next to six flags, awesome shops and dinning at the shops of la Cantera ... So there is plenty to do (including golf).

Great location for shopping! very good spa, peaceful grounds and setting. Wonderful food at both restaurants! good service. Stayed in the Casitas, I liked the Casita because it was away from it all, but you will need to drive your own golf cart and it is away from the hotel so some may not like the Casitas. Also the Casitas A/c is very noisy! Try the great Texas wines! they will surprise you how wonderful they are. The kids club was one of our favorites! love the smores and the pools. All in all a great weekend!

Room Tip: don't face pool spa area if you like peace and quiet! don't get an adjoining room if you don...

I stayed here the night before a conference held in the ballroom. The hotel is beautiful, our room was large and the linens were very nice. The shower was an overhead rain shower, it has a hand held rain wand as well.

Be prepared for a $200 charge to your credit card for incidentals along with a $30 facility fee. I travel a lot and stay in a variety of hotels, typically 3 and 4 star. I have to say that for the price I paid for this room I did not the value or service I had expected. Also ask for the key to your mini bar at check in or you will have to call down to access it or to open the fridge.

$30 for amenities such as self parking, standard internet service, and workout studio seem like those should be included at a hotel of this caliber. I have never been charged to park my own car before. They do offer yoga and zumba classes as well in that amenities fee.

Room service fees are more than I have seen in other similar hotels 21% service fee plus tax and a $4.00 delivery fee. It states the staff is given a 17.8% gratuity out of the 21%.

We arrived and drove down to the self parking. Shuttles do run so you can wait for one to pick you up. The shuttle driver did not help at all and chuckled as I was struggling to get my bag loaded. The only reason we tipped him is he pulled around one isle to our vehicles (we arrived in separate cars) for us to get on the shuttle. When we arrived at the entry to the hotel the bellman didn't even open the door for us.

We checked in and proceeded to a very nice corner room. It was really spacious and decorated nicely. The toilet area has a pocket door for privacy as well as a main door to the bathroom.

Housekeeping and maintenance is a bit slack though. There was trash in the top of the closet that someone had left behind from their dry cleaning. Mold growth in the corners of the tub/shower. One of the beds squeaked when you sat down on it and the wall had paint missing from where the security bar has repeatedly been smacked into the wall. Makeup mirror was nice but would have been nicer if it was fastened tightly to the stand it sat on. Bathroom has poor lighting for applying makeup. When I brewed hot water for tea it came out brown like coffee so I assume the single cup coffee maker does not get rinsed out by housekeeping.

Shower water would not get very hot, tried the handle in many different spots but still just warm.

For me none of this was a show stopper or a reason to find another hotel. If it weren't merely for the convenience of being at the hotel the night before an event held in their ballroom I would have been just as comfortable and saved $100+ staying a few minutes up the road at a different hotel.

This room slept 4, (there were 3 of us) but only glassware and paper coffee cups for 2 along with only 3 towels, 3 hand towels and 4 wash cloths. Also they give 1 complementary bottle of water per room.

Summary:
Pluses: Beautiful grounds, close to shopping and entertainment, great space to walk or jog in, nice size room. PF Chang's, Cold Stone, Mi Mi's Cafe, Chili's, TGI Fridays within 5 miles. River Walk is about 15 miles from here, Fiesta Texas across the street with shuttle service to and from.

Negatives: Customer service is not what one would expect for a resort, self parking is dimly lit and a long walk from the entry of the hotel, additional fees are way above the value I received. Beds could be upgraded or at least changed out for ones that don't squeak. Room that sleeps 4 should have glassware for 4.

Room Tip: Corner rooms are very nice size. Much like the size of an efficiency apartment. Ask for one not ov...
