This is a great drive and tour that is easy to do yourself if you have a car..and it is free. Just start at the top..the closest one to the city and work your way down south along the Mission Trail. Maps an be printed from the webiste or picked up at visitor centers. The first one , technically, is The Alamo, then Mission Concepcion, Mission San Jose (where the visitor center is), Mission San Jaun, and finally Mission Espada.
No mission is the same and each has it's own character, history, church, architectural signifacance, and uniqueness. My favourites were Concepcion, San Juan, and San Jose.
To stroll the grounds of these missions is to walk through 300 years of Texas history..a must do.

The trail takes you to the early missions along the San Antonio River. The trip can be done by car in half a day and is very close to San Antonio, Definitely recommend for the history or architecture traveler.

Informative pamphlets let you learn as much or little as you want to. Restrooms at most every site and a nice gift shop at the headquarters. Short movie to watch if you want to learn more. All the missions are within a few miles of each other - very doable in about 3 to 4 hours...some have very nice grounds with shade if you want to bring along a picnic.

Very nicely organized visit to 4 lovey historical missions in the San Antonio neighborhood. The missions are somewhat well preserved. The park rangers are very helpful And knowledgeable about each mission. Mission Conception is the best preserved and loveliest of them all. Very well organised self guided as well with volunteer guides.
