“Little gem”

I was surprised by the fantastic collection of Egyptian, Etruscan and Roman artefacts. It was well stocked and informative. They also had a small but interesting collection of modern art - I am not a modern art fan but it was great that they provide a card with some interesting insight into the pieces.

“About the size I like for a museum”

It's not a bad little walk to get to and you really should walk it. Free on Tuesday nights after 4pm. Nice collections and isn't packed with crowds.

“Unexpected treasure”
Reviewed February 28, 2013

Had a little time before checking into my hotel on the River Walk so stopped in here since it's just north of downtown, a block west of Broadway. (It's located in the former Lone Star Brewery with plenty of free parking right across the street.) The collection of Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan & Roman artifacts blew me away! Apparently a local benefactor bought many of them from Britain (I think from the estate of a Lord Lansdowne) & donated them to the museum. It took more than an hour for a first look at just these collections, in addition to taking the time to go back & really appreciate them. There is also plenty of Spanish & Latin American art, Chinese ceramics, etc.....too much to take in in one visit. This museum's definitely one to return to repeatedly!

A couple of caveats - the layout has a number of sky bridges & not all the floors flow continuously, so getting around can be a bit confusing. I found that the visitors' guide doesn't do a very good job of showing how to navigate. Also, the cafe, advertised as being open, was closed, which meant replanning where to lunch.

“Nice surprise!”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

Well worth a very nice walk along the Riverwalk from downtown. There is an amazing collection of Latin American art and folk art. Also, a very impressive collection of Roman statuary and a very good collection of Melanesian art collected/donated by a very generous local donor.
