“First visit to SAMA, loved it! :)”

This was my first time at SAMA and I really enjoyed the Athena exhibit they had. The front desk was very helpful and the student discount is definitely worth it! The map is pretty confusing just because the museum is much bigger than you think. Plus the parking is a bit small. So go during the early week. Overall I really enjoyed it and the Asian exhibit is also something really interesting for adults.

“Give yourself plenty of time!”

This museum is really big...really big, and has a little bit of everything, so give yourself plenty of time to see it all. Keep your eyes open for the Dale Chihuly glass installation in the ceiling.

“Great Exhibit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 10, 2012

Beautiful exhibits all around. They had an exhibit of Aphrodite that was magnificent! Artwork of all kinds; Egyptian pieces, modern art, etc. A great, quiet place to go and escape the heat if necessary. And only $10.00.

They turned a brewery into a gorgeous art museum that is a must see. Comprehensive collection in a managable setting.

“A comprehensive collection of artwork for all interests”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 30, 2012

Some museums have one theme for their art collection and dedicate most of their space to this theme. Others have lots of variety in their themes and dedicate a little bit of space to each of the themes. The San Antonio Museum of Art is the latter. There is something for everyone's taste.

There is:
American Art, Ancient Mediterranean Art, Asian art, Contemporary art, European art, Islamic art, Latin American art, Oceanic art, plus featured exhibits. Each section is small but the artwork is beautifully presented and most have captions with explanations.

The Museum is housed in the old Lone Star Brewery. The building is completely renovated and while some areas look quite modern, you can still see some of the old architecture of the brewery. There are four floors of exhibits and on some of the stairways (which are glass enclosed) you can see the San Antonio river and the beautiful lawns surrounding the museum.

The featured visiting exhibit was Aphrodite, Goddess of Love. It was a comprehensive display of all things related to Aphrodite and the time period. I found this to be the best exhibit in the museum. Very well done.

There are elevators for anyone who wants to avoid walking up and down 4 floors. I recommend you wear comfortable shoes and plan to spend a couple hours at least. You would need all day to see all the exhibits in their entirety. Choose what you want to see and then come back again for another visit. You are bound to find something there that interests you.
