This district is full of gorgeous houses, each one different, from the 19th century and early 20th. There are also houses that haven't been renovated, but they are few. The Steve's and Villa Finale are the most professionally run and each has charms of its own.

The houses in this district are absolutely gorgeous and beyond anything you've ever seen. Unfortunately, you cannot go inside and tour the houses as actual families own and live in them. It is still an amazing little "town" of its own that is very cool to walk through.

Our B&B provided a brochure that was a guide to walking tours of the historic homes in the area - we saw a few of them and it really is a lovely region with many grand homes in various stages of restoration. The nearby commercial district is very typical of peripheral to downtown areas and we did see broken business windows on both mornings that we walked in the area - but they were repaired by the following day - so business owners in the region are very caring - even when they encountered vandalism.

This neighborhood is close to the river walk. It has several Greek Revival, Victorian, and Italianate style mansions. It's a very charming area in San Antonio.
Beautiful neighborhood to drive through or take a long stroll.

Something for history and architecture buffs, the King William Historic District self-guided walking tour is a gem.

Print the guide at home or obtain one at the front gate of the Preservation Society, the first stop of the tour at 107 King William Street. Walk along and learn about the homes of the German merchants who settled this area in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Beautiful architecture and interesting histories.

The area went through a decline at one time and many of the homes were in disrepair. But, many have been restored to their former glory and a few are available for tours.

I have read a few reviews complaining about the shabbier homes. Obviously, the historical significance of this area wasn't appreciated. These homes just need someone someday to be able to love them back into what they once were. The majority have been maintained or restored.

Allow 1-2 hours to really appreciate the neighborhood. We did see some folks doing the tour by car, but not every corner can be accessed by car.

One thing about the map: at one point it says to cross the river. This is wrong. It really should say to LOOK across the river, not cross it. The whole tour is on the east side of the river.
