This was definitely the highlight of our vacation! We took a bus (only $1.30) to avoid extortionate parking fees, and our driver kindly told us where to get off and how to get back.
The whole River Walk was a lot bigger than we originally thought, so I'd definitely recommend doing the river cruise first (separate review) to figure out where you want to go. We were a little unnerved by the fact that there are no guard rails next to the sidewalk, so be careful if you have young children or are unsteady on your feet, especially if it's busy.
There is a vast array of shops and restaurants, so something for everyone. We went on a week day morning which was fairly quiet, and enjoyed a relaxing walk seeing all the sights.
There are many access points from the street and wheelchair access from the hotels.
A fun, albeit exhausting day!More
