Owner description: With more than 8,500 animals on 56 acres, there's plenty of fun for the whole family. The San Antonio Zoo was first established with a donation from George W. Brackenridg in the 1800s. Two of the first cageless exhibits in the U.S. opened here in 1929 and the bird collection is one of the world's largest.

We have visited this zoo more than a half dozen times and it's always great. One of our favorite things to do is feed the lorikeet's nectar. They are so cute and fun and will hitch a ride on your shoulder, play with your hair and if you have a backpack on, good luck getting them off. They love the zippers & clasps. This zoo is well maintained, habitats are nice and animals look very happy. Visit! You'll love it!!

I read reviews before deciding to go to the zoo and was very disappointed when we got there. There was a ton of construction going on. The main things to see were fish and birds. My daughter was disappointed there were no lions, gorillas, or giraffes. I'm glad we went on a half price day which was still too much in my opinion. I definitely wouldn't go back to this zoo.

After having gone to the Dallas and Fort Worth Zoos earlier in the week, this zoo was the least exciting. It seems very dated and they didn't seem to have very many animals. The natural habitats are very small and usually only had one animal in it. It's a good basic zoo, just nothing special.

There was alot of bird displays. Very few animals...1 asian elephant. A few monkeys. Reptile house ok. The butterfly exhibit was extra... Had to buy tickets. Expensive to eat. Allows small coolers. The drink with 99 cent refills best on hot days... Worth the price. Small petting area. No giraffes!!!

Like most zoos these days it's a bit run down. it seems like most of the investment was a couple of decades ago. Several of the attractions were closed. They had a major section blocked off doing construction which will be good in the future. We went early in the morning but it was still hot so many of the animals weren't visible. Still it was fun. Parking and access is convenient but there are a number of hills which could make it difficult for those with mobility challenges.
