Two Ponyz Ranch

Karen was a wonderful host and facilitated an amazing getaway for us and our dog, Winston. The ranch is beautiful and perfectly situated to provide gorgeous scenery and myriad hiking trails. We loved taking long hikes during the day to see the ruins and look out over the land. Karen was very helpful in giving us a thorough review of things to see and do in the open-space and in Mountainair. She was always present and kind when we called with questions, but gave us the privacy we sought for our weekend away! What set our stay further apart was the casita itself, which was well-equipped and beautifully decorated. We spent any time not outside cooking in the kitchen (I only wish my kitchen were so nice with such a view!). A truly great place with a gracious host. The perfect getaway for us, and one we knew immediately we would return to again. Thank you again!

I was lucky enough to spend my Birthday week at TwoPonyz, back in April. This property is exquisite, luxury out on a ranch. Eco conscious, green, solar, back to nature, except the Casita is easily one of the most upscale places I've ever stayed. Plus you get birds chirping, gorgeous sunsets, views to die for, right out either your front door and porch, or back door with porch, grill, and seating. I was visited by the Two Ponyz every day at some point, as well as the Two Dogz. Hostess, Karen, is a wonderfully fun and extremely thorough Innkeeper. Will definitely be back, many times!!!

My recent visit to 2 Ponyz Ranch was indeed "wilderness luxury" and a welcome respite from our recent harsh winter. My husband and I found the New Mexico property breath taking. Each time we stepped out onto the patio, we were treated to gorgeous views of the nearby Manzano Mountains and a chorus of birdsong. The private and beautiful casita offered escape, relaxation and solitude, and we found ourselves reluctant to leave it to pursue the many exploration and hiking opportunities nearby. The full kitchen has every amenity one could need to prepare a full meal each night. When we discovered that we had forgotten some "staples" (olive oil, vinegar and mustard) we were pleased to find them tucked away in the cabinet, ready for use. After a particularly dusty outing, there was a washing machine available for cleanup. The furnishings in the casita are very comfortable and a fire in the living room kiva, enhanced our cozy evenings. Entertainment, in the form of fiction, nonfiction, poetry and travel/guide books, an Ipod dock with speakers, television with Dish Service and numerous board games, was abundant. The bed couldn't have been more comfortable. The casita and property are impeccably maintained. Karen Smith, the owner, was a gracious hostess who was always available but never intrusive. She went out of her way to ensure we were comfortable and had all that we needed. 2 Ponyz is tucked away and requires travel on a "ranch road" that we found to be well maintained. It is within 6 miles of the charming town of Mountainair and a 1 1/2 mile hike to the Abo site of the Salinas Pueblo ruins. During our 5 day stay, we hiked a beautiful trail in the Manzano Mountains, drive the 21 mile Quebrada Scenic Byway, hiked into the San Lorenzo Canyon, visited the Sevietta Wildlife Refuge, and enjoyed terrific coffee and lunch at the Alpine Alley Coffee Shop in Mountainair. We do a good deal of traveling and often seek out self sufficient houses or apartments, rather than full service hotels and inns. 2 Ponyz is among the best we've visited, for its comfort, amenities and reasonable price. We are already planning our next trip!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Two Ponyz Ranch. The casita is very well-equipped and beautifully designed and decorated. Great selection of books. We loved the private setting, watching the horses, and the ability to hike right from the casita. We spent the first afternoon exploring some of the two-track roads/trails in the adjoining Cibola National Forest. The next day we walked to the ruins at Abo, part of the Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument. (This is a six-mile round trip with no shade, so might be less enjoyable in the summer.) We visited the other two ruins (Quarai and Gran Quivera) by car on the way to/from Two Ponyz and also recommend them. Karen was very helpful in providing information on things we might like to do in the area. We had fun poking around the old-fashioned hardware store on the main street in Mountainair, as well as the Cibola Art Gallery. We also enjoyed our lunch at the Alpine Alley on the north edge of town. We were glad we picked up groceries before arriving, because once we got to Two Ponyz we didn’t move the car until we left due to how much we enjoyed just relaxing at the casita and exploring the area on foot. The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare meals, including basic condiments. We are used to driving on gravel roads and had no problems getting to the casita based on the detailed directions Karen sent us. She was an attentive host and available if needed, but also respected our privacy. We had fun visiting with the dogs, Sadie and Cody, but it's clear Karen keeps a close eye on them if guests would prefer the dogs not visit. We are very happy to have found the Two Ponyz and hope to come back someday.

Spent Thanksgiving at the Casita, and it was pure bliss. To the point we might make it a yearly ritual... To the point we didn't leave at all for 2 days and stayed in our Pajamas. The snow helped that excuse out, way more snow than normal for this time of year. The owners had the road plowed for us, good thing or we really would not have gotten in. We are locals so were shocked at the amount of snow. The Casita itself is luxury in the middle of wilderness, it was so perfect we could have easily stayed and just moved in. Large, roomy, open, lofty. The heated floors are heaven, the fireplace even more so. Perfect fully kitchen, and a dishwasher, great for a quiet Thanksgiving. The Horses are fun to have right out your door, as are the numerous bluebirds, and the very gracious pups. Oops almost forgot the great hosts, instant friends! The Casita is extremely efficient and green. Recycling, composting available. All natural amentities and cleaning agents. Between the heated floor, the oven, the fireplace, and the outdoor snow and freezing, we never got cold, it was bliss to walk around barefoot.

Room Tip: only one room, so no tip there. Great TV Satellite service. No mobile phone service for us on Veri...

A return visit to a favorite get-away! So many things to love here: Exceptional accommodation, caring hosts, wonderful views, and lovely peace and quiet. We stayed for a week this time and it was just what we needed. There are so many great places to hike: The Salinas Monument ruins, the Cibola National Forest and Manzano Mountain, plus, this is a really great area for mountain biking. We also had an excellent day at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge where we saw thousands of Sandhill Cranes and Snow Geese, as well as many other species of birds - amazing! At the end of each day, we came back to this cozy, luxurious casita and enjoyed the kiva fireplace, and the peace of the grazing horses right outside. We ate at Alpine Alley and cannot recommend this café enough for consistently great food and friendly atmosphere. Breakfast there every morning was such a treat - best coffee ever! We also enjoyed some great burgers at the unusual Shaffer Hotel. There is a lot of wonderful art in Mountainair, and I'm becoming a believer about the "good energy" here. I swear you can feel it. Karen and Adam were, once again, the perfect hosts, there to help when needed, but never intrusive. We truly felt we were away from it all, in a place where we could reconnect with nature, and history. Two Ponyz will always be a special place to us, and we hope to "disappear" here again!

Room Tip: Fun area for mountain biking!

What a lovely place! The location is wonderful, with a spectacular mountain view right out the patio doors. The casita is comfortable and well-furnished (down to having a pair of binoculars and a bird book on the coffee table) and offers you all kinds of ways to relax. I loved the whirlpool bath, but frankly, the most relaxing thing I did was watch rainclouds spinning over the mountains from the comfort of the sofa. I guess that was the best thing for me--Two Ponyz made it very easy to enjoy what nature has to offer, whether you were inside or out. Karen, the host, did a good job of balancing being attentive with leaving me in peace. If I needed anything she was happy to be available and helpful, and if not, she didn't intrude. She was even thoughtful enough to paint some of the rougher rocks on the road in when I told her I was arriving in a small car. (The road is do-able without a 4WD, but slow.) I would definitely return and have already recommended Two Ponyz Ranch to my friends.
