“Basic hotel--good location but old and not very clean”
Reviewed July 26, 2009

This hotel is very basic--hotel website makes it looks much nicer than it really is. (They all do but in this case difference was extreme.) Everything is old and, at least in our room, pretty beat up. Chipped furniture, worn carpet, stains on the walls.)

The real problem I had was that the bathroom was filthy. I am not a clean freak and usually have no problem at all with hotel cleanlines, but this was gross. There was matted hair and lint all around the perimeter and someone's hair clogging the drain in the sink. Soap scum on the counters, etc. This couldn't have resulted from just one bad cleaning. I don't think it has been cleaned right in a long time.

Also, the air conditioning system is ancient--a wall unit that makes a lot of noise but doesn't seem to actually cool the room off. The room was stuffy and hot. I was uncomfortable and would not recommend this hotel.

We stayed in this hotel in 2007 and loved it, so we booked it again for four nights this summer. We had to leave and find another hotel after the first night. First off, we returned to our hotel at 11:15 p.m. to find no parking available in the lot and had to park two blocks away in a lot that does not even belong to the hotel. There was supposed to be a parking attendant on duty to park our car, but there was not. There were several smaller details that turned me off, as well...our deadbolt did not work, there was only one bar of soap to share between the bathroom sink and the shower, the hallways were unbearably hot, they advertise room service but do not actually have it, there is no continental breakfast and there are no convenience items for sale. The room we booked was $200 per night...for that much, I expect a lot more than this hotel offered. We switched to another hotel that had all of this for $50 less per night. I spoke with the desk clerk when I checked out/canceled the rest of our stay at Waterfront and she said that they are under new management. She was very nice and did not charge us for cancellation...that was the only good thing about our stay there.

We've stayed at this hotel for Halloween the last few years, but, sadly, we won't be going back in 2009 because they are raising their price yet again! I thought $300 a night was a bit much, but now with tax it will be $350 a night!!! We already shortened our trip last year due to the rising price, but this year we are skipping it altogether. The hotel is nice and the location is perfect, but they do nothing extra to justify their high rates. They don't even offer a continental breakfast anymore like they did the first couple years. Not sure if I'll go back again around Halloween.

My family recently traveled to Salem at the request of my husband, an American History buff, who wanted to go to the museums and teach our two children about the Salem Witch Trials. We stayed at the Salem Waterfront Hotel due to the recommendation of a friend.
While making our reservation, I checked out their Special Packages section of the website, and was pleased to find that the "Discover Salem” promotion met our needs exactly. Our hotel room was very comfortable, with a view of the marina, and the hotel staff took care of us extremely well. Not only were we able to go to all of the surrounding historical museums, but due to the hotel’s proximity to public transportation, we were also able to spend a day in Boston, giving our vacation an effective balance of education and fun, which was perfect for the entire family.

Stayed for 1 night. When reserved room had asked to be on top floor but NOT near elevator/stairs/vending/ice machines. After checking in realized we were on 1st floor of rooms and right near ice machine and elevator. Went downstairs and were moved to desired location w/o any problems and with an apology which seemed sincere
Room was large and clean. Bathroom was clean, plenty of towels and great water pressure.
Pool was warm and clean with towels provided.
Didn't eat in restaurant but did enjoy paper early in am in lobby with free coffee.
Staff was friendly

I had read some negative reviews about this hotel so I booked with some trepidation. My fears were laid to rest. The room was very clean and large. Everything looked new. The hotel is within walking distance of all the attractions and the harbor although we couldn't walk as much as we wanted because it was too cold and windy so we had to take the car instead. There is free parking at the hotel. There is one restaurant in the hotel where we ate breakfast. The prices are hotel prices, but not shocking. There seemed to be only one waitress who appeared a bit frazzled and harried, but the food came out within a reasonable amount of time and it was good. I have mixed reviews about the desk staff. When we arrived, the girl who checked us in was quite nice, but the girl who checked us out looked like she had the same enthusiasm being there as someone waiting to go in for a root canal. Overall I was quite pleased.

This is a pretty basic hotel, rather like a travel lodge or similar. However, it is modern and clean and in an excellant location to explore Salem. The value is good compared to other hotels in the area and I believe would be great for families in particular as each room has two beds and the hotel has a small pool.
