The NPS has several guided tours of a reconstructed 19th-century sailing ship, of the kind that brought spices back fro te Orient, makig their owners millionaires. The tour also includes the old customs house where Wahsington Irvig (amobg others worked).

There's a free film show that gives a good introduction to Salem's history beyond the witch trials, and the employees offer good advice about what else is around. Maybe less crucial if you're in Salem in the summer, but in the winter, it's definitely worth stopping here.

We wandered Salem and stumbled across this centre. As we were there in winter many of the other "attractions" were closed. This ended up to be to our advantage as instead of a "Disney" type experience we received factual information to help us understand the happenings in Salem during the witch trials. The two short films, one free and the other at a cost are really worth viewing. The rangers are very helpful and willing to share their knowledge.

This beautiful Visitors' Center is a great starting point for your visit to Salem. We watch the film and explore the exhibits every time we visit Salem. It's centrally located and there are clean restroom facilities at the Center and easy parking nearby. The staff will help you plan your visit, and from there you can walk all around Salem quite easily.

Helpful rangers will give you maps and pamphlets on historical attractions in the area. THE FILM (nominal fee, about 1/2 hour) made me feel a part of the personal and political life in 1692 that culminated in the infamous witch hunt. Understanding the many issues involved absolutely changed my view of all the other historical sites in Salem.
