“Didn't smell apples”

Food was perfect. The truffled wild mushrooms were out of this world. Atmosphere and service was also excellent

“"Outsiders Go Home!"”
Reviewed March 27, 2013

We had booked an event here. In the interim days preceding it, we tried to talk with the General Manager on the phone,. He never returned calls and when he answered an e-mail occasionally, he was rude! This very unprofessional person seems to be giving an otherwise nice restaurant a bad name! We ended up cancelling the event. We did not want to do business in a place represented by this kind of management! When we asked to speak to the owner, we were told that he is an absentee owner. Well, before this GM ruins the place completely, he better stop being absent! We have since found a much friendlier venue for our event.

“Unwelcoming.Rude. The worst host.”
Reviewed March 21, 2013

Stopped in on Saturday March 16 after a day in Salem between 5 and 6:15 and asked the hostess what kind of food they severed. Was handed a paper menu with about 6 or so dinner items on it. Didn't see anything that I was craving so nicely asked if there was a Mexican restaurant any place close. The male host ,an older male that should have known better, told us there was a place but it was exspencive. I have never seen an exspencive Mexican restaurant. We left. I would never eat at 43 Church St. or recommend it to anyone due to this mans rudeness. We could have afforded to eat there but it was not what we were looking for. I will not be talked down to by anyone and not say anything. I should have asked for the manager but because we were not staying desided not too.I don't know what this hosts problem was but you are in the wrong job mister. If you can not be polite, you should not deal with the public!! Management needs to speak to this host.

“Tasty & Comfy on a cold winter's night”
Reviewed February 3, 2013

We have recently been to 43 Church twice, both times have sat in a booth near the lovely (gas) fireplace, creating both warmth and ambiance. Server (Barry) did a great job helping to guide us to food we would enjoy (and what we might not want to). His recommendations were right on, in that everybody enjoyed their meals. We sampled; the duck was fantastic, cioppino was hearty, scallops seared beautifully, burgers, soups and chicken were all well prepared and tasty. Portions are adequate, not huge, but everything; service, food and atmosphere will make a return visit a must.

“Disappointing...”
Reviewed January 24, 2013

This is a beautiful restaurant, unfortunately both the food and service are below standard. The watercress soup was impossible to eat - it was bitter and lacked seasoning and my husband sent it back (and I don't remember the last time we sent food back...). The waitress was trying to be very nice and accommodating, but there was clear lack of training and common sense. We were not given any small plates to share appetizers, so we had no use the bread plates. When we were done with that, she never took away dirty bread plates and dirty utensils - just gave us new knives and served the main courses. I any restaurant this is quite unacceptable, certainly not in the restaurant that is trying to be high end. The main courses were hit and miss. The roasted duck was good, cooked correctly, the pork chop was extremely salty and root vegetables were overlooked, the scallops were cold, but well prepared and risotto was a little watery but tasty. Overall, its one of the instances of "creative gone bad" -- certainly not worth the money they are charging. However, training staff properly and have chef actually taste the food may improve things a lot.
