Owner description: Phillips House is the only home on historic Chestnut Street open to the public, and it provides a glimpse into the private world of the Phillips family during the early decades of the twentieth century. The kitchen, pantry, and a domestic staff bedroom, present a rarely seen picture of how the great houses functioned as new technologies were being introduced.

This is a must see experience when in Salem. Take some time out of your touring to see the Phillips House and learn more about this unique time in American history. The tour guides are friendly and excited to share their knowledge. Great gift shop upon entry featuring local literary works and goods. This tour will take you back in time.

We stumbled on the Phillips House while taking a walk down Chestnut Street. The tour was excellent. Our guide was enthusiastic, friendly, and well informed.

As the only mansion open to the public, I want to know how to become one of the private owners of such a gem. Our tour guide had not been there long, but was so knowledgeable, and it was clear she was passionate about the family she was sharing with us. I found I wanted to know more about them myself! Every room had so much of interest, we spent much more time that we had planned to there, and we were glad of it! The garage housed antique transportation I had never seen before. Not a lot of fanfare, but this house was one of the highlights of our trip.

If you want to take a stroll off the path of all the cheesy witch stuff in the city's center, Chestnut Street is a nice scenic walk just off to the side of the boundaries of a typical Salem tourist's map. When you're walking through there you can almost imagine the olden days when the road was probably still dirt and horse carriages rolled by slowly on a Sunday afternoon.

The Phillips House tour was only $5 per adult and the tour guide was super friendly and clearly very into sharing with visitors the history of the house and family. When you walk into the house, it feels weird at first as if you're trespassing, because the way it's set up inside it still feels like a 1900s family still lives there. The little gadgets the family had installed in the house too long ago are fun and give insight to what life would've been like 100 years ago (if you were ridiculously wealthy of course.) If you're an old house buff I'd definitely put this place on your list. For couples, you'll find it to be a charming little visit. Good stop for families too I'd say, there were two kids in the group with us and they seemed into it the entire time.
